anybody up for a good adventure? ON XBOX?!?!?! |
|
What's up with the games on console systems (XBOX especially) that try to snatch RPG's from their rightful home on PC... and they sell really well, too!
Okay, one of my favorite games, Baldur's Gate II: SoA is on XBOX in the form of BG: Dark Alliance. It's not even really an RPG... just a shinier version of the old N64 Gauntlet Legends. Can we PC-ers stand for this outrage, seeing our beloved Fallout (yes, Fallout will be ported also) and Diablo too, no doubt, walk that evil path of console gamedom?

Well, consoles are the future when it comes to mass-market compatible gaming. They are (comparatively) cheap, they are easily transportable, and best of all... you don't have to twiddle any settings or pieces of hardware to get a game running. _________________ Jaz |

(ditto on my previous ARGGHHHH!!!)
That's what I'm talking about... console games petition to the likes of the "general public" who make console gaming such a huge market.
But think about it, you couldn't hand your average Halo player (not to bash Halo; completely different genre) a copy of BGII (just to name one large RPG)
and expect them to stick with it... they'd get too bored!
That's why there are ports (dumbed-down versions) to sell these games that are considered great on PC to the console-gamers. What was the last "brainy" RPG or RTS game you played on your console?
To share a shattering childhoood experience: I bought the "Battle Chest" version of C&C: Red Alert a few years ago, so stoked about playing this classic game. much to my dismay, i learned that a friend had bought this very game for his PS\1.... destroying Russia with a game pad?!?!? OUTRAGEOUS...
RPG's only belong on PC... prove me wrong by naming just 5 awesome, totally original RPG's on console ( I will credit you Final Fantasy) that could match up to these:
Diablo series
Baldur's Gate Series
Daggerfall
Ultima (any of 'em)
PS: Torment
Fallout series
Everquest series
NW Nights
c'mon, post your answers... just try _________________ I hear they bake yummy cakes in China |

Here are your five:
Final Fantasy series
Secrets of Mana
Wild Arms series
Chrono Trigger
Xenogears
Console RPGs are not my favorite pastime, however - I like them just as much or little than other party-based birdy-view games. I just found those I mentioned to be at least as good as/ better than most of those you listed (Daggerfall and Ultima Underworld are the only games of those you listed which have been 100% to my liking when it comes to CRPGs).
Generally, I'm of a similar opinion. If I have the chance of acquiring a shooter, CRPG, jump'n'run or beat'em up for both platforms, I'd buy the shooter and CRPG for PC and the Jump'n'run and beat'em up for console. For me, those are the only combinations which work. A shooter on console? Well, I own a few, but it doesn't make them as playable as the others. A beat'em up on PC? Same here. Each platform is perfectly suited to one or two genres.
EDIT
Metal Marines was a pretty nice RTS game for, among others, SNES and PC. The PC version turned out to be far worse than the console version. These things happen rarely enough, but they do happen once in a while. _________________ Jaz |

KOTOR 2 won't be released this year. It's going to have a simutaneous launch of the PC and console version early next year. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Okay, in truth, your list is missing Phantasy Star III (or Online) and Star Ocean. And while Xenogears and Wild Arms were OK... they weren't THAT good... at least IMO. _________________ I hear they bake yummy cakes in China |

To be true, I just took the first five console RPGs I played which came to my mind, but once again, it's all about taste... I really liked Wild A.R.M.S. _________________ Jaz |

For a console series, I always loved the Dragon Quest(Warrior) series.
It is the most popular series in Japan.
It was heavily influenced by Wizardry and is much more complex than Final Fantasy. _________________ Between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities…there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars…Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand…to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandaled feet. - Robert E. You just think you are upset about consoles stealing the RPG genre from PC's. You are not really bothered by it now. Wait until the next generation of consoles comes out in a couple of years. You will really be complaining then.
PC game sales have already been falling. When the new generation of consoles are released, PC game sales will probably fall until all of the pretend PC gamers have been washed out, leaving only those who are dedicated to PC's, and just happen to play games. _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Actually, there's something new coming out by APEX (I don't recall the name)It's like a PC\Console Hybrid... it hhoks up to your TV but has an OS, mouse and Keyboard like a PC... I heard that you can pop any game in and just play.

Total garbage. 20 hour poser rpg. If you want a jrpg...then play a real jrpg. Honestly, not even worth renting. I would be angry if I payed money for that game. - Robert E.
