Would this be a valid strategy, from those with the game?
   

I'm planning on making a character class made with quick-to-grow skills like athleticism and acrobat, along with some thieving skills. My goal is not to carefully steal from people, but to gain some levels by running and jumping around or whatever, then getting thrown in prison to lose those skill points. This is so my character may gain LOTS of stat points to distribute after gaining a WHOLE lot thanks to losing skills and gaining them back. Then, I'll begin my adventure, as a "hardened" criminal, striving to make up for his past wrongs - though it won't hurt that he has the stats of 10 beginning characters put together.

Do any of you folks who have the game think this cheap little strategy might work?

Well, I've only played it for one day, but if it's like Daggerfall, that won't be a good idea to try here. In Daggerfall, a negative reputation would do more then make people give you nasty looks and give you attitudes. You would be hunted by people at night when you slept. One of my characters, a member of the Dark Brotherhood, had legions of orcs invading her sleep every night, even in her own magically locked house. Plus, reactions from people were from one end of the spectrum or the other. Either so bad they wouldnt even allow me to initiate conversation, or so good they would entrust me with the knowledge that they were really brotherhood members themselves.

But, that was the brotherhood.

I wouldn't try it though. It sounds nice to have high stats before you start gaining skills again, but you'd really be doing the work twice, wouldnt you?

If you want to gain quickly, pick skills that move up without you using them. (which I mentioned earlier and you mentioned here) My guy is already level 5 and hasnt sent that letter to casidius yet.

The idea is...
   

The idea is that it is much easier to raise low skills, and there is a cap on how many levels you can gain, based on skills - so, base your major skills on which ones are quick and easy to raise, gain a few levels, then get caught and "pay for your crimes" (perhaps only picking on one group you don't like, and perhaps not even losing reputation with them thanks to jail time), and hopefully trade your easilly-gained skill points for levels and thus hard-faught stat points. Thanks to a slow company, I won't be getting the game until tuesday - so until then, I brainstorm strategy.
