How do you use Hypnotic Lure? I cast it somewhere to try to make the enemies go away from me, but they didn't seem to take any notice of it. Is it at all useful?

I have had SUCH good success with that!! Next time you go into battle with a bunch of enemies, say 5+, use the hypnotic lure right in front of your party. For me, the monsters all run into melee range (great for my short range specialists, and helps my long range guys to hit), and then stares at the lure. My party is about level 11 now, and the lure works great on monsters between levels 8 and 12...
I think the lure is one of the best mid game items!!

The critters have to resist it every turn, but it always seemed to me that you were more likely to snare one that was close to the lure. If your crew is closer to the cirrters than the lure, you might have limited success. I didn't use that spell often, but when I did I usually put the lure between the critters and me, and a little off to the side. |

So it doesn't work outside of combat well...for example, drawing enemies away BEFORE combat has started? That's what I was trying to do.

I think that there are only two different kind of spell:
1) can be casted only during battle and when battle ends their effects will desapeare
2) can be casted only not in battle mode
I do not think that there is spell that can be casted in and not in battle.

Hypnotic Lure only seems to work(for me anyway) on the really dumb creatures. Anything with more than half a brain totally ignores it.
So... it works good against swarms of bugs, rodents, maybe some even slimes. It works well against those damn ants in the swamp. |

Precisely! As I said, my chars are around level 11 now, and in the swamp area...
The lure rocks those millipedes/flying bugs/ants!!

sonic boom works outside of combat. its handy to use when you havnt initiated combat yet and have a long ways between you and the monsters, cast sonic boom and then the fight will start with monsters that are unconcious! |

Be careful not to use sonice boom to increase spell skills though...
It's gotten me killed in Arnika more than once . I used it near Braffits temple when I thought nobody was nearby and ended up getting some of the wandering guards on occasion.
...reload....
Anybody ever try the lure on the really tough critters? Like maybe on Ascension Peak???
I'd be interested if it helps at all... |

I attacked someone in Arnika, ended up killing all the guards..
In Rapax on the lower level, these idiots get four swings at me per turn, so I used hypnotic lure and pulled in only half of them. since they are on different routes guarding the area. threw an elemental between us, and wallah.. . finally won...

I tried it with some plants on Arnika-Trynton road...it didn't get any of them...it's like it was just a light floating in the air that did nothing. I'm probably not using it right. What would be REALLY useful is if, say there are monsters heading toward you..before they initiate combat, cast it on one side of them, they move toward it so you can get around them and not have to fight them. This would be helpful when needing to get past about 10 Juggernauts. Juggernauts (more powerful version of Piercer Modai) suck, and I won't be surprised if I meet more powerful versions of that type of enemy.

But think of the carnage you'd miss... BTW, Juggs are the top of that creature type. |

I never really found Juggs to be much of a challenge myself...
They are really succeptable to status effects, like insanity, and nausea.
I always started a fight them by having my alchemist cast Noxious Fumes and my bard use the insanity instrument. They will usually all run up to melee range and then start attacking themselves .
They're really kind of a push over if you handle them right. |
