System running slower and slower

I can't play NWN at all now. Rebooting doesn't help, neither does getting rid of background programs.

Nothing has changed on this pc, so I just don't understand it, but the program is so slow it feels like trying to use a 286. NWN worked fine two days ago. Any suggestions on where I should look for the problem?

Thanks for any help.

Well, that's unusual. Are the other applications (especially intensive ones like games) working properly?

It could be fragmentation. Or low disk space. Or something could have gone wonky with the program (a reinstall might help, if it's not the first two things I thought of).

What are your system specs. What version of NWN and where are you in the game. Does this happen with another module, new player?

I would lean towards either low disk space or a virus. Is it only NWN or do other programs suffer as well? If it is only NWN I would suggest reinstalling it, perhaps it has become corrupt in some manner.

I.e. answer the following:
How much free space does your drive have?

Does it affect other graphically intensive programs?

Do you have antivirus software?

Have you tried reinstalling NWN? (Save your characters and games, of course!)

Good luck!

A friend of mine had a similar problem and it was a virus. You should download a new anti virus software.

Well, thanks for the ideas, but nada worked.

This system is:
Dual PIII450, 256MB, Nvidia Riva TNT (32MB), Win98SE, SBLive.

As I said, it worked fine, but then just suddenly slowed down. I haven't been able to load a saved game since after half an hour of watching it try to load the area, I just kill it.

No virus. Everything else runs just fine (including Morrowind). I'm stumped.

Sorry, you seem to imply this, but I want to know for sure: have you tried reinstalling it the game?

If you reinstal NWN delete everything. Backup the stuf that you want to keep. Maybe there is a fault in the setup. (maybe strange refresh rate?).

I have the same problem! (although I have not even considered MW) I reinstalled v1.19 (a total reinstall), got new drivers for sound and video ... moved directX 3D hardware acceleration setting around, and can just play. My problems did not start until Chpt 2 ... or v1.21 . Take your pick, they both happened at the same time.

The only differences between my system and yours is I have a PII 450, 128MB, TNT2 (64MB). The new video drivers got rid of the worst problems, but I occasionally get stuck in an "echo sound trap" where the sound of battle cry or chest opening (usually a chest) echos for a good 30 seconds while the screen freezes. Then things slowly start to clear up. I then save and exit to desktop and run again ... restarting seems to help .... for a while.

Anybody out there have any good ideas?

Edit: It just occured to me to ask, what brand name are you using. I am using a Compaq (Okay Xen, I consider myself picked on - but at least the tech support has been reliable ... if not too bright).

AHH! I have solved most of my performance issues! It seems that I have to go to the Options/Sound/Advanced and specify "...Fast 2D audio" every time I play. It won't save it, so I have to respecify every time I play. But this has gotten rid of the "echo trap".

I still get an occasional "jump" when the screen gets around to updating (especially in crowded places) and it can make large combats a tad annoying, but no longer hang on a noise.

Well, it seems that my problem was probably a virus. The techs who tried to pull anything at all from the hard drive were completely stumped. Everything was corrupted and nothing was recoverable. I got my pc back today and am installing everything from scratch. Including the new Norton AntiVirus.
