Also over at GMR is a short review of Gothic 2. They note it's not as good as KotOR (it's hard to beat perfection) and gave it a score of 7/10:
I wouldn't be surprised if the developers of Gothic II walk around their office wearing tight leather and vinyl with whips and riding crops at their sides. These guys have a fetish for difficulty that borders on sadism. You want proof? How about an action game that forces you to edit a systems file before you can activate shortcut keys for quicksaves or potions? Or perhaps a squeal that strips you of all previously acquired power and leaves you weaker than the average farmer's wife?
I must be tired...what's a "squeal"? |

What's with all these reviews?
Clunky controls? Maybe, but one gets used to them after an hour. People who don't like action RPGs might be put off, but that mustn't influence an objective review.
Too difficult? Nope, as long as one completes only a few more quests than absolutely necessary, and kills a few more monsters than necessary, the hero levels up fast enough to be able to finish the game. If most quests and foes are dealt with, the hero gets too powerful - like in every other CRPG I can think of. (The addon is another story...)
Mindless leveling? Nope, right from the beginning there are enough quests to do. If you call having to kill a few monsters here and there "mindless leveling", what do call the main activity in most MMORPGs?
Game is daunting because highlevel monsters are accessible right from the start? Maybe, but if you've been lobotomized by linear games, you shouldn't be writing reviews. And you'd better never touch an MMORPG.
No potions during combat? See above, would make game too easy.
No quicksaves? Why do these reviewers only complain about little things like these in non-mainstream games? Why does nobody complain about that stuff in hundreds of console games? |

I am not sure why being challenging is a negative for a game these days. Who wants to skate through a game? I find that I enjoy taking on enemies in G2 that I really shouldn't. It is quite fun to peel off individuals from a pack or find ways to use the environment to kill powerful creatures.
Aside from the menu system that makes it too easy to start a new game, when all I want to do is load , I find the controls and interface to be quirky, but rather endearing after I got used to it. No biggie. The underlying game gives you so much I wonder why it gets dinged 20 points or so for something so minor.
I found Morrowind had much more serious flaws in actual gameplay, but that was almost always ignored in reviews. _________________ "You two are a regular ol' Three Musketeers." |
