Gothic 3: Engine from The Guild 2 to be used? |
|
GameStar crew has attended the first demonstration of the engine to be used in Jowood's The Guild 2 on this year's E3. The interesting part is that they have somehow obtained the information that the same engine will be used in the third installment of the Gothic series. I'm not really sure how this fits in the info from the recent interview with the Piranha Bytes team, which claims the engine for Gothic 3 is being completely done from scratch... |

Completely done from scratch? Where did you read that?
In the interview, KaiRo clearly explains:
"Large parts of the engine will be developed by us, as the requirements to the technology are too special for a ready-made engine to fulfill them. So it is not important, which enginge will partly make it into our game, as you wouldn't recognize it anyway"
and:
"There are licensed components, but the main part in developed by us." |

Does the term "completely rewritten" suit you better? |

Nope, as it would be wrong, also. |

I guess it should be considered 'heavily modified'. Obviously, the core of the engine is a third party product that has been modified to fit the team's needs.
This new information sheds no light on who might be responsible for the original engine - The Guild 2 could just be using the same engine core along with some of Piranha's modifications, for all we know. |

But here are no screenshots yet for Die Gilde 2, so we still have no idea or indication how it will look. _________________ "Who are we to call this planet Earth, when it's clearly Ocean."

So, in the end, I guess it's the licenced components that make the two games kindred. And, since it's only something to start with, they will probably turn out to be very different in the end...
And, true, information regarding The Guild 2 are as numerous as those regarding Gothic 3. |

The engine core is the same. Both 4HEAD Studios (The Guild 2) and Piranha have modified and enhanced the basic engine. For infos, screens and the E3 trailer:

But PB has done a better job judging on the screenshots. _________________ "Who are we to call this planet Earth, when it's clearly Ocean."
