Won't run with my radeon 9000

Yeah so I had Gothic 2 running just fine on this machine like a year ago or whenever I first got it.

Specs:
Athlon XP 1800, 256m ram, Radeon 9000
(not great I need to upgrade I know)

Anyway now when I try to run it I get an error along the lines of:
"Can't create D3DX context ! error: DDERR_UNSUPPORTED"

The only things different is I have the latest catalyst (4.12?) and Service Pack 2, which I have heard can hose some games. As I said it was running on this machine before so please don't yell at me to get a better comp, that's not helpful kay?

sp2 sux...I'd try rolling back the vid drivers first, because tossing sp2 normally means a reformat and install. sp2 don't like to be removed

Probably its Service Pack 2 problem. If that's not the problem it looks like it might be a problem with DirectX. Make sure you have the right version or newer version of DirectX installed on your system.

I've got this problem as well...a couple of time it gives me the same error message, but mostly the game freezes (or crashes), and i have to reboot the PC.
My card is Radeon 9550 (256Mb), rather new...with my old Geforce4 (128) i was able to finish G2 a lot of times without ANY problem, but now..damn it!!
It's very frustrating, cause i just bought NOTR (Italian version) yesterday, and i cannot play more than 3-4 minutes before it crashes!!!
Any suggestion?

G2 is already getting old and gives problems with a lot of new videocards, like GeForce 6600 and others from the 6 series.

When you played it before did you have the same graphics card?
I've also installed SP2 and it doesn't affect Gothic 2 in any way.

True. Gothic II is rather old now, but the version (it says 2.7) I just bought (G2 and NOTR) should be already patched and updated...but I can't be sure.
When I played in the past G2 (english version), but i surely remember that with my old NVidia (don't remember the chipset, 'cause I sold the card...128mb) I finished the game several times (i played through the three different paths...fire magician, paladin and dragon hunter) and i didn't encounter ANY problem...good graphics, fast and smooth.
Now, with a totally rebuild PC, with P4 3000, 1 GB Ram, and this damned Radeon 9550 (256Mb), i'm not able to play even 5 minutes before it crashes, freezes or sometimes even reboot itself!!
I've tried everything...I don't know what to do now...I wrote a mail to Jowood, explaining the problem, so let see what happens.
It's a very disturbing situation...
