I strongly suggest a 64/128mb card like a geforce3 ti but if you dont want to buy one,

a geforce2 (32 mb) should do you good.

You shouldn' t choose a graphics card according to just one game, since choosing one is a serious step for any pc-owner.
First, I doubt you'll be playing gothic more than a couple of months(first, second and maybe the third time), and, second, more important, Gothic demands fast memory and a lot of it, but not a hyper-speed graph. card.
So, state your configuration, and we'll think of an optimal solution..

I really just need to play Mafia and Gothic. As for memory, I am picking up an extra 128mb.Only having 128mb of memory sucks.

You have some small appetite, dude
In that case, you'll probably get satisfied with 2nd generation of geforce cards, like MX400(better cards won't run as much better with your cpu..) MX200 is not an option(actually it is, but i would not recommend it!!!), because the MX400 is already crippled geforce 2, and MX200 is the next faze of "crippling"
Anyhow, swiching to 256mb of ram is good, and will definitelyh affect the speed of a system(remember to switch swap to 2,5*256=640mb)..
About video memory... It is a common thing to compensate lack of video memory with ram, by allowing agp to use some memory for graph. card; but since you'll have no memory to spare(you'll be playing gothic 2 aka memory eater ) you should consider giving some more money for one with 64mb of ram..
Also, do change your os.. My recommendation is Win98, if one of your friends has it..

A GeForce 2 card with 64MB is OK: I am running Gothic and Mafia (demo) on GF2 GTS, and things are very playable (but I have a faster system too).

Anyway, you motherboard is probably AGP2, so I would not like to depend on it. Definitely go for 64MB (more is better) to minimise using it. Why don't you consider a budget card such as GF4200? They are fast, cheap and come with descent amount memory..

In the end, if you won't get good framerate, it's probably the rest of your system that is to blame..

You should buy your card in a shop where you can return it in case it doesn´t like your relatively old system.

To simplify the matter avoid every graphics cards with GeForce2 MX, GeForce4 MX or an exotic chip.

Some recommendations:

DirectX7 chips:
-nVidia GeForce2 GTS / Pro / Ti / Ultra
-ATI Radeon7500

DirectX8 chips:
(-GeForce3 / Ti-200 / Ti-500)
-GeForce4 Ti 4200
-Radeon8500

DirectX8 includes more features than DirectX7 (although your system is too slow to use them).
Speed differences inside the groups are neglectable. Choose a group and buy the cheapest card.

I finally upgraded my comp. I got a new GeForce2 64mb pro and I now have 327mb Ram but my framerate stays between 17-20fps outside the Old Camp. Any suggestions for smoother gameplay???

Yeah, seriously dude, just get a new processor. If your motherboard can't handle a new processor, just get a new machine. If Gothic and Mafia are all you care about, don't look for a high-end system. My system is a PIII 933 with 384mb RAM and a 32mb GeForce 2 MX/MX400. Not a high-end rig by any standards, but it runs Gothic just fine.

Gothic 1 is framerate capped at 23fps, no point in running it with a super-duper video card.

Gothic *2* on the other hand will use as fast a video card as you can throw at it! In fact even the best technology available will not give you more than 35fps in the Khorinis docks area at night with 400% visibility.

Nothing to do with the graph card, really...

CPU then I guess...

I hope they come up with a new engine for Gothic3 which will take advantage of all the snazzy H/W I plan on buying in 6 months or so. And hopefully with the capability to have shields, horses, etc.
