Do you need to be skilled first?
I'm looking to get into the OC and then become a Mage, the Sect is kinda wierd and the NC is a dump

You should be at least trained, though you can do it without training.
To use a lockpick: In front of a chest or door, hit the action key. Your character should squat in front of the chest. Then hit the left strafe, or right strafe. If you get the comment "Sounds good", you've guessed which direction correctly. If you get "Shit, I'll have to do it over", or the lockpick breaks, you've gone in the wrong direction.
Of course it's a series of left and right movements, the longer the series, the harder the pick.
A hard lock might be Left, left, left, right, right, left, right.
Each time you miss, you start over.
Does that make sense? |

I just bought 50 lock picks fairly early and went without any training at all. I completed without finding any pickable locks I couldn't open. I didn't have to save either. Trial and error seemed to be the same whether I had training or not. So I break a few lock picks. Lock picks are easy to come buy. Thiefing, Sneaking, Skinning, and Acrobatics where only very slightly advantages. They could have improved the game balance here. |
