SWG: SOE Banning Innocents?

We recently reported about a credit dupe that was making its rounds in 'Star Wars Galaxies' (<a href="http://www.rpgdot.com/index.php?hsaction=10077&newsid=31271">story</a>). The statement from SOE was strangely worded as they were threatening to ban <em>all</em> people with illegitimate credits, no matter where the credits were coming from. It seems like a great number of innocent people have now been suspended or banned for receiving large amounts of money for totally legal in-game services or legal trades etc. <br>There are threads on the subject in just about every galaxy (server) forum but this one right <a href="http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?board.id=Eclipse&message.id=349793" target="_blanK">here</a> is really remarkable. Let's hope that the truly innocent are unbanned ASAP and that SOE more thoroughly investigates credit transfers before wielding the ban stick. There's such a high number of people affected that it seems hard to believe that SOE only zapped real dupers.

How lame. They shouldve just banned everyone and canned the project! That way, nobody could ever dupe money again! I know i wont play SWG. I quit in beta. duh. the game is lame.

SWG Player

It's an amazing situation, the theory is that any player who recieved duped credits can be banned but it seems likely that it's only large transactions that are noticed. The most vulnerable group seems to be merchants/crafters as they make/sell expensive items plus there are rumors of people randomly giving large tips to other players to get them flagged as having dodgy money.

Most threads on the subject get deleted on the boards and a lot of people are getting upset about it.

On the positive side this is a clear message to people who are inclined to break the system and if unchecked it could lead to hyper-inflation which is why I guess that the devs are being so harsh.

Some accounts are being reinstated after investigation though which is good and some bans may just be to prevent the cash spreading throught the economy.

I have a Master Architect. I makes millions of credits a week because the items I sell include big ticket items. I stopped selling things for now because I knew of this incident and I just spend time doing other things in the game world. Knowing there was a major dupe incident, ignoring it and selling large ticket items anyway, then crying about being banned and being innocent...I have to roll my eyes, shake my head and use my favorite cliche. There are two kinds of people in this world, those who get it and those who do not.

Well, that's pretty typical for SOE to just delete anything with a negative touch .

Anyway, the thread I linked to was about the banning of an 11 year old girl on the Intrepid server who was close to mastering Dancer and received a very generous legit tip from someone for her healing services.

It does BTW look like the unbanning has finally started now. There are several reports from people on the boards whose accounts have been reactivated.

I personally have no sympathy for the way SOE is dealing with this dupe. They allowed the first credit dupe to run rampant for weeks (if not months) and there wasn't a single person complaining about an unjustified ban back then.

They are totally overreacting this time. I would cancel immediately if they'd ban me for no other reason than the pure reception of illegitimate credits (their advice to not accept large tips is ridiculous since you can not choose to accept/reject tips from anyone).
It's a very uncomfortable situation because I have a crafting character as well with a total of six active vendors in a highly frequented mall. Will I be able to log in tonight? Only Sony knows... .

And thats actually exactly what these companies which sell ingame money on Ebay, Playerauctions,... want. Get people to hate SOE because their XXX billion credits were deleted which means a loss of thousands of real dollars for them.

I used to work for a MMORPG and whenever we banned such dupers they would come up with ridiculous stories like this. Fascinating how stupid they are though, making so obvious errors that let the company associate them directly to a specific auction website and seller account. Right after banning them the auction would suddenly dissapear which just prooves it again and again.

And its fascinating too that often when banning such accounts they would directly know the names and email addresses of all the higher staff and send them direct emails with complaints.

An 11 year old girl who received a tip for healing; the house burned and then the account was banned when coming back; they tried to make a joke to a friend and do as if they were selling ingame money as cash; a person just wanted to randomly give huge ammount of money away;the 5 year old son deleted accidentally all characters(1 minute after he duped money and gave it away, but thats never told);...

Of course their friends and guilds would be upset that their friends were banned for "no reason", not knowing that a huge part of the guild earnings went directly to an auction website. They are far better off without those people though. Some have characters in different high end guilds to gain more stuff to sell too.

It seems like SOE is not banning people btw. Their account is closed for 3 days and then opened again. I guess that they ban those people which sold and temporary close the account for people which bought money.

To me it's not a surprise that so many people are involved and complaining. Many sell game money for cash and far more people buy it ...

I'm in no way associated to SOE btw.

To add another comment

I don't know what exactly happend but I totally agree with Moriendor that they should fix the dupe immediatly and not let it go rampant for weeks and then ban people. That seems typical for SOE though...

They made an announcement that they would ban everyone who received duped money. They made it pretty clear that whether you knew or not didnt matter. I think we can all agree that is moronic, but it is what they said. If they hadnt said that sure, the safe assumption is that the guilty are just making excuses.

But they did ...
