Controls

Hi all
I've just got the demo of Gothic, and want to play through that before I decide whether to buy the game or not. I've started the game, and worked out how to move about, pick things up, etc. The problem I have now is that I can't seem to select any weapon other than fists, despite the fact that I have a 'rusty sword' and a 'pickaxe' in my inventory. I've tried pressing space, but that just switches to unarmed combat and back. Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers

Open your inventory and move the up and down arrow keys to highlight the weapon you want to use. Now press ctrl + the up arrow to select the weapon. If successful the weapon should appear on your back.

The number you see is the shortcut for this weapon or spell.

In the beginning your char is extremely weak. You should only fight single molerats, scavengers and bloodflies.

You can only carry one melee weapon at a time, and that is always stored in the #1 slot. Pressing the one key will recall the weapon also.

Yeah, I posted that about half a month before Morrowind came out. Of course, I'm the one to talk, since I stole it in the first place.

i dont understand why so many people complain about the controls.. i NEVER keep the default controls for any type of game..don't try to get accustomed to the default keys, change them to the way you like to play..besides the mouse 1 button is set for action by default and mouse 2 is set for jump

Hi everybody, this is my first post. I just wanted to throw in my two cents about the nice controls. My always beeening hungry when im on my comp found that the gothic controls accually alowed me to use one hand to walk around fight and do geneally do anything. I could then use my other hand to feed my self. this made me very happy and i thought you guys should know how i felt

Dear Hive Tyrant, looks as if we could welcome another WH40k player into the fold .
And I agree, being able to play and eat at the same time is terrific .

My grief was not over which keys they bound to actions but the actions themselves. For about 5 hours into the game, every time I tried to unequip my sword, I'd end up dropping it. To me, it would seem logicall that if ctrl-up is to equip, then ctrl-down is do de-equip. But then again I've been called weird more than once before. Actions are not logical to me. And no matter how bound, they will still be illogical. Certain things just shouldn't be done with the same command. And certain other things should be done with the same command. And some commands act inconsistently. Like when you have bunch of corpses on the ground, why can't you switch between them with ctrl-left and right? The character also acts very funny based on controls. I gave up trying to control my character with the mouse because the movement was just so unnatural and made me seasick. Straffing behaves differently if you have your weapon out than if you don't. Opponent targetting is inconsistent--sometimes you'll turn to face your opponent and sometimes you'll just swing in empty air. And what's with first person view? When you stand still, it gives you first person view, but if you run, it looks backwards??!! I mean, it's cool and useful, but not really what first person view is supposed to do, now is it?

Speaking of controls, something I just can't seem to figure out... HOW THE HELL DO YOU DIVE? More specifically, if you jump from high into a body of water, you will end up under water. Using your regular movement controls, just turns your character around. How do you make him get to the surface again??? I tried everything, even one of those whole k/b smash things. And pressing every key on k/b. Nothing helped. He just turn and twists around like a dumbass and drowns.

Hold your jump key (default is alt or r-mouse button), and press the arrow keys to control your movement under water (press down will make him get to the surface again)

Transforming into a lurker avoids drowning.
