Spoiler: How to get your own "home" early in the g

Actually, there are two ways to achieve this: if you don't mind living in a hut first, you'll just have to finish the tax collectors quest being loyal to the Empire (you'll get this quest in the starter village, if you listen to rumors). Or: there is a nice elven lady talking about some smugglers in a cave nearby. Finish them off (can be tricky if you rush in - use some exploring and thinking to make this easier), and you can adapt their cave to your liking.

Actually, having a storage place comes in handy very soon. It's not so much about having a place to rest, but to store surplus goods.

Can you drop an item in the open without having to worry about NPC thiefs?

yes, you can, but don't you want some secluded space for your own?

I wouldn't like to have my helmet of spell absorbing lay somewhere on a road between Balmora Vivec *G*

Is it the one that is closest to the starter town?

Another "home" in the first town...

In the first town, you can also pick the lock on the door upstairs in the Travellers Inn.

There's a nice bed and chest that you can use there.
