and youre 100% sure that u really saw him the first time u played the game?
U said it was 3 years ago so I can assume u were back then a "newb to gothic" so the question is what can a new player to gothic can do that experienced players cant? was it some kind of beginer's luck or simply another man? but on the other hand, who could be this man if he wasnt this "oldman"

Im starting to really like this thread

@TrUmaNshO,

Yes i was a real newbie, a greenhorn to Gothic but not to rpg's.
There is much intelegent logic in what you ask " what can a newbie do that experienced players can not? - - - there lies the answer? let me try to remember a little more:- the first time i went into the fog tower i was killed by the skeletons instantly (mmm - break the chains with this world)?
I tried again later with a bit more strength, i killed two or three but was killed again, the next time i was doing well till i got to the broken brick wall near to the skeleton mages, i was killed again by a mob of skeletons.
With determination and even more strength, the next time was easier, i killed them all and checked out everything, and got book (1)
Reading the book inserts the book (2) ontop of the tower with the pillars, obviously i didn't know this then and only found book (2) on my normal travelling of the land.
I know i did not have the last, or even book (5) (not sure) to be honest i didn't really care about the quest, it did not seem to be important, when, once again running through the maze of twisty passages, i remember there was a kind of "thud" and strange darkness before finding myself in a cave type room (it was not a hall) and there he was "the old man" as described earlier in this thread. Yes it's true, i have no reason to lie, in later games i tried many times over and over to locate the cave but it was no use, i finally gave up.

@ SpanGi,

I still have and use only the original c.d's (they are scratched a bit but still work o.k) 1.08j.

When Wolverine_men gave this hint : "happy hunting" , what do you think he meant?

I dont think that means that u have to be a hunter with all hunting skills like I saw on the thread. What?? to be a hunter would be the ultimate right path?? It doesnt make sense

I think Wolverine_man is pulling some legs here. Or SpanGi is right about needing to be the first time through. The writers could easily set something up in the windows registry to count the times you've played for this reason. I thought I would give it a try when y'all started. I did no beginning quests that involved hurting someone else (except Kirgo, but he agreed to it). I didn't even sell the swampweed in the new camp. I knocked noone but Nyras and Lukor down and didn't kill them. I pissed noone off. I didn't rob any graves in the orc cemetary. The only questionable thing I did was learn lockpicking and robbed chests out in the open. I finished getting the focus stones without hitting one of our buddies. I did Chromanin after getting the fourth stone but before giving it to Saturas. I found the guy dead. So what's righteous? Oh well, I want to know what happens with y'all so good luck. Oh yeah, using 1.08k.

Hey there jmurdock,

Nice to see you back after you pc problems,

I take your points, but it isn't like that, i regularly re-format and re-install win/xp so there are no registry entries to contend with. Aslo i would not steal from a "locked" chest (to use lockpicking)
I am certainly not pulling my own leg Wolverine_men is a "good" type of person, he does not give too much away, this lets the doubtful Thomas's get tangled up in their own disbelief, i am amazed by the number of
players who shout "hoax" " etc'.

@TrUmaNshO,
once again you have hit on a key point, i too have thought about the "happy hunting" clue, i have no definate answer, he means hunting for "something" thats for sure. The best clue though is where he says the game "gently nudges the player in the right direction" ? could that be the "true-path" no diversions?
i don't know.

Oh well, it was a thought, give us more of a hint than W_m would you if you find something?

Righteous though, could that include beating up Lefty and them? Didn't do that one. They do deserve it. I tried once being 'good' and waited for Chromanin until after being banished and noticed some different dialog options. Minor though, one I remember was added to Gorn when you come back to report to Saturas about the mine collapsing. It was asking him what he saw at the new mine after the raid. It's the only time I've seen that option.

The solution can't be too complicated else no one would have EVER claimed to have completed it.

or maybe IT IS complicated since only 2 people said they saw this big bad old man

Anyway I think we need the advice of a lot of people to find this right path we're talking about - - - - - - - lets all make our brain work!

ANY IDEAS?

phew, I finally read the thread... it took a lot of time, but it was worth it... I have played Gothic a long time ago, and didn't even do the chromanin quest then, but this got me greatly interested... I might even reinstall Gothic and play it again... Here, are some of my thoughts, which may or may not clash with each other. They might also be in a totally random order, as I remmember stuff from th thread.

1) When the game 'gently nugges you' might it mean that you should always take the default option... What I mean is, whenever talking to someone, take the first dialoge option or something like that... Might be worth a shot, through I doubt it... still, its the only way I can explain that hint.

2) Happy hunting might not actually be a hint at all. On the other hand, it might symbolize that the thing you search is find near some wild creatures. It might also suggest that you need a specific skill or to kill a specific monster, to make this possible.

3) I think, however, that 'our' best bet is to try to remmember as much details from the time you DID find him. Believe me, if you have think about something long enough, you will remmember things you never even thought off. For example, I went on a holiday to Greece when I was 6, and I couldn't remmember much about it for a long time... then, one night, while I couldn't sleep, I tried to rememmber something... I remmembered a small detail, that our room had more beds then the neughbour (how I remmembered that, I've got no idea)Then, I concentrated on that fact, and I recalled some more things... In the end, I had a fairly detailed account of what happened there...

4) hmm... AFAIK, from FAQs, you can't get a book without reading the previous one... If so, isn't it possible that you can only stumble on the old man after you DIDN'T read all the books... Thats just a wild guess, through.

5) Is it possible to visit some of the areas where the books where in G2? Thismight be totally unrelated, but I want to see the areas atleast in G2, if I didn't in G1. ^_^

6) Righteouss (sp?) might not mean being TOO goody good. It might only involve making the right decisions, and I mean the larger ones, not should I pay 20 ore or not for the map etc. I think we should once again get back to the point 3) ie. trying to remmember. I think it can be possible that you can actually become too good as actually miss the quest because of that.

7) In the end, its just trial and error. Try playing the game like a n00b, not thinking about anything... you might get lucky. Or, even better, give the game to a friend of yours but never help him... even a bit... Maybe only an innexperianced player can complete the 'lucky string' and actually do it.

@jmurdock, i also left out the Lefty bit, (for now) but it must be done (a good deed)? i will remember that bit about Gorn for later. About this "simple" thing, i think it's paradoxicle, it is so easy and simple that it's being overlooked.

@TrUmaNshO, "we need a lot of people" well yeah, better still, are you replaying it? players like Killerofevils II is giving it another try with feedback.

@VPeric,
1. Maybe, don't know.
2. Don't think so.
3. Good idea, i will start trying to remember.
4. Oh, absolutely.
5. No
6. You must earn "worthyness"
7. Yes, that what i'm doing, don't worry, i know how to be a newbie (there's lot's to copy from on these forums).

I remembered something from G2 where when he meets the first bandit he says something about going after an amulet but getting ambushed. Isn't there a sequence in G1 where if you refuse to pay Bloodwyn, Grim leads you into an ambush? I've never had it happen as I either paid Bloodwyn or avoided him. If the old man shows up after a certain sequence of events, could this be one of them? Does anyone who saw the old man remember being ambushed with Grim?

Just a thought.

@jmurdock,

Absolutely spot on, these small (but significant) deeds are an "accumulation" of the triggers, i too am paying the 10 ore payments, but just too see what would happen, i told Bloodwyn "no more payments" he said "suit yourself" then the guy who has his hut built bang in the middle of the main camp path attacked, i had no chance, the guards chipped in with their crossbows.
I did the Lefty bit, gave out all the water, talked to Horatio etc' then went to bed till morning, next day i said something to Lefty like "hello there friend" (after beating him) and imediately got 200xp and my journal says "sometimes you have to give a little pain to make the bad guys learn a lesson, another good deed?
Not quite sure about Grim, i suppose i must speak with him to enable the trigger, but then not take up his offer? (a devious but obvious ploy)?
I may have to fight sometimes but i'm *being good*?

Wuuuuuuu! Just got a new computer, and an Aleinware one Well now I have to reinstall all my games and start my Chromanin search again. I read all the new stuff on this thread and that is a good point, only noobies have seen the old man but what did they do? Well if it works once per computer and I got a new one then I'll just try out our new theories and get a result. My opinion on the happy hunting clue would be to only hunt or beat down people if it is really necessary.

Hey Killerofevils II,

Good to hear of new pc, same here, a couple of weeks ago,

Bad news, i met the corpse, i am not sure what to do, although i did play around with him a bit but there's no clues, the known character is BAU_940_RIDDLER just a simple peasant, completly searched the maze of twisty passages with book 4, then collected book 5, then searched again. however i am tempted to carry on (from book 4 save) and progressively try to
search the fog tower at regular intervals all the way to the end, being good seems not the "only" thing?

P.S. After getting the book from the corpse and killing the "skeleton mage of the fog tower" i ran down to the water/ocean turned around and ran back, NO corpse, gone, - - - but thats no good.

P.P.S My journal is empty of quests, never seen that before?
