Hi Im new here, hows it going?

Hi, it's my first post on this wonderfull forum. I have just bought Gothic 2 and love it, love it, love it, what a great game, all the junk Ive paid full price for just to lob it out of pure disgust. Then I buy Gothic 2 half price of eBay and its gotta be the best game I played since the hobbit.
One thing, I got lockpicking skills and lock picks but cant pick owt, any help.

You need to manualy pick the locks by working out the combination.

e.g. left-left-right-left-right.

I think in G2 they made it so that it changes everytime you fail. (Break the pick)

As far as I know, the lockpicking skill just helps you avoid breaking the pick when you make a mistake.

If you press the wrong direction, you must start again from scratch. But the combination should be the same until you break a pick. (Someone correct me if this is wrong).

Good luck!

Narr, what I mean is when-ever I target a door/chest it just tells me its locked, I never get a chance to pick owt, maybe its because my hero is a dunce.

Dungeon Master was another fav of mine.

There are a few doors and chests which can only be opened with the right key.

Btw, Dexerity helps you brake lockpicks less easy. Before learning the lockpick skill it just says that you haven't learned the nescessary skill.
As for changing the combination -> Absolutely false info. You can even get all the combinations of all the chests (which are pickable) at the cheat guide.

Na,Na,Na, Ive think I've tried every door and chest known to man, and still no locky picky option.
Is it a bug? Is it a corrupt save? Is it for lack of dex? Is it the way I hold my tonge.
I have lockpicks and lockpickin skill, I hold my LM button and F-arrow, man looks at door/chest, man says "I havent the right key coz Im so thick"

What about the ones NOT known to man?

I have no idea why its doing that. I have a vague recolection of having a similar problem myself, but its been so long since I played the game I cant remember what I had to do.

lockpicking skills plus lock picks in your inventory should yield the following results:

1: you should kneel at the chest rather then get a dialog that says "I know nothing about picking locks!"

2: if the lock is not pickable, you will get the dialog "I'll never get this open without the right key!"

once you have knelt before the chest move your cursor keys left and right and listen for the clicking should to let you know the movement is correct. If your dex is fairly low you will break lockpicks fairly regularly but with an increase in dex you can get to the point that you can figure them out easily without breaking a single lockpick at all, but that will be when your dex rises to the level of 90+

Note: there will not be a pick the lock type dialog as there is in some other RPG type games. You kneel before the chest, move the cursors left and right to find the right combo and then the chest opens.

As to the debate on whether the lock combination changes with a broken lock pick, this does not occur to the best of my knowledge. The locked chests in this game remain static unless you change a value in the gothic.ini files found in the Gothic2/system folder of your game on your hard drive. This is a cut and paste from the gothic.ini file as it defaults iwht the comments:

pickLockScramble=0
; ... you can increase the feeling of lockpicking if you enable scrambling the combination on loading an savegame
; the value is the maximum length of combination which will be scrambled, 0 = off (default)

All-ritey-then, seems it might be that I just havent come across a pickable door/chest yet and just get the "I'll never get this open without the right key!"
Ill give it another go tomorrow, but bed now to heal my wounds, a early morning hunt followed by wolf soup.

One extra thing that I dont think anyone has stressed is the fact that you have to learn how to lockpick before you can pick locks.

*edit*

nm...just noticed you said you already have the lockpick skill.

How's it going you ask? I'd say tensions are high here because all non-German Gothic fans (i.e. - most of us) find ourselves in a sort of odd deja-vu.

Around this time last year, everyone on the board was wondering...."Where is Gothic 2 English?".

Now the same can be asked "Where is the English Gothic 2: Addon?".

Again, we find ourselves without official information and going on heresay. So again, we wait (patiently?) for the release of a product we know is long done and is sitting in publisher limbo.

But in any case, welcome to the boards.
