I believe, if you have a minimum strength score (15 I think), you get an extra + to damage for increased strength. For instance - Elven court bow - normally +3 to hit, if your strength is 15, you get +3 to damage.

As far as I understand it, it just adds (or subtracts (!)) your str modifier to the damage to max of +3 (with the elven court bow).

So if you had a str of 20 (+5) and a bow with mighty +5 you would get +5 damage, and if you had arating of 18 (+4) with the same bow, you would have +4 damage.. However, if your str is 8 (-1), you will do less damage with a bow with mighty +N.

Actually, in the core rules if your strength is below 10 you get a penalty to ANY bow's damage anyways. You can barely draw the sucker. Forget about Mighty.

But yes... mighty followed by the number indicates how much of your strength bonus you can put into the bow's damage. it's like... dexterity maximum on armor. If you have an 18 dex (+4 ac) and put on full plate you only get the benefit of a 12 dex because its max dexterity modifier is +1.
