Links to good independent rpgs ?

Hello !

I´m a long-time rpg-fan and i`m looking for RPG`s from independent developers. I would really appreciate if somebody would post links to their sites even if the games are still WIP.

Thanks in advance,
Lannister

No website.
No screen shots.

If you're into MMORPGs:

Wurm Online
Currently in develop-the-graphics-engine stage. Java/JoGL.

Magicosm
Amazingly close to completion. Java/Java3D, moving to JoGL.

IMHO the best roguelike game there is, completely free. May I add that nethack is extremely addictive. By default nethack is text only, but it's easy to find graphical frontend for it.

I've never played any of spidersoftware games, but many people like them. Demo are freely available.

Bard's Tales like game, demo should be out very soon.

I've played games from Spiderweb Software. Get Geneforge, it's a great game.

Like others here, I also recommend Spiderweb games, especially Exile 3 even with it's dated graphics, once you get about 5 or 10 hours into it, it's a LOT of fun. I didn't like the isometric games as much (Genoforge and Avernum) but they were still good. Blades of Exile is a particularly good value because it includes an editor, and allows the download of user created modules for great replayability. The community is still fairly active via the Spiderweb message board.

Demise and Mordor, by VB designs, were fun. I especially enjoyed Demise but it's only if you like a loot and exp based dungeon crawl with little plot. I would classify this as an advanced CRPG.

Runesword has gotten fairly good reviews and has a good following. It's freeware. Runesword 2 is a limited demo. Runesword 3 is in the works.

Also, I enjoyed Faery Tale Adventure 2, which has been abandonware for a while now. It's worth tracking down on one of the many abandonware sites, here's a good one:

Another that is more of a puzzle game, is called Deadly Rooms of Death. You play a sword wielding hero that has to traverse a 25 level dungeon, with each level represented by between 5 and 15 'rooms.' Insanely difficult but lots of fun. Turn based. It's currently free, an improved version of the original, named Caravel DROD. They have a nice forum if you get stuck in any of the rooms. This is definitely for those who like 'brainy' puzzle games. Reminiscient of the old Shamus games for the old Atari computers.

Hi there,

Although not STRICTLY an rpg, i'm working on a game at the moment which is very similar to Age of Wonders, or HOMM series, which are featured on this site so... what the hey!

I'm trying to address an underlying problem which has been apparent to me for a long time with HOMM and AOW..etc...

Civilization was great because the game was consistent, you got to know the map.. and your civilization.

HOMM etc.. which claim to be the ULTIMATE fusion in RPG and Strategy, fall down because they reset everything when the next level starts. You lose most of your heroes, All the cities which you've built up are replaced with hovels... and the map is once again unexplored. In what way does any of that fit in with the roleplaying we know and love?

So basically, this is a Real-Time, Civilization management game set in a fantasy world which will remain consistent, but should evolve in look due to things like roads / Railways / Mines /cities etc...

(Then follow the link to Fantasy Evo)

ETA : End of september, 2003 if i'm VERY lucky! (More likely xmas)

stu xxx

p.s., any help would be grately appreciated

This game has great possibilities but they are far overshadowed by a few things. The developers are just a few hobbiests not professional developers. You will recieve comments like "MEH" and "There are plenty of other games for you" from them. TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL !! Another thing that ruins the game is the PvP where you are not given a choice if you want to partake and you can not enjoy the crafting, terraforming, construction side of the game without putting up with raids that not only set you back in your efforts but also in your stats if you are caught by the raiders and killed.

This game has so much potential. Hopefully a real company will see it and take on the ideas and develop it the way it deserves. Any fool can come up with a brilliant idea. But fools can not create it.
