How the hell do I use the "cheats"?

No matter what I do, they just don't wanna affect my character. What am I missing?

For the record: press `, type GiveXP 3000 or GiveLevel 4 or dm_giveXP 3000, press enter, target your character with the targeting cursor.

Nothing happens. The whole mechanism must work or something, since if I type something like dm_god it says success. So something must be doing something in there. ARgh!

All I want is to test charcter progress through levels and see if a particular character type is viable.

Just so you know that someone cares, I'll post.

Unfortunately, I have to post that I haven't the foggiest notion of how to use the cheat. Sorry.

Okay, I took that as a challenge. Try http://gamespot.com/gamespot/stories/hints/0,10872,2871991,00.html

If the link doesn't work:

Note: All Codes in this area are case-sensitive.

To access the Debug Mode and all the cheats, open the nwn.ini file located in your Neverwinter Nights folder, and add the following line underneath the Game Options:

Debug Mode=1

You can now access the console by pressing the tilde (~) key, and type in DebugMode1 to enable cheats.

Raise Stats

Raise Strength
SetCHA # {its my guess this is not correct!}

Raise Dexterity
SetDEX

Raise Constitution
SetCON

Raise Intelligence
SetINT

Raise Wisdom
SetWIS

Raise Charisma
SetCHA

God Mode
dm_god

Mini Horse
dm_mylittlepony

Attain Gold
dm_givegold #

Attain XP
GiveXP #

Raise Level
GetLevel #

Warning!!

Don't use the GiveLevel or dm_givelevel or something like that. It will give you infinite levels! Just use one of the give xp commands. Anyone figure out how to give items like swords and armor? One more thing set it back to DebugMode 0 to get rid of the yellow areas. That turns debug mode off.

Actually GiveLevel X is not that bugged. I think it just gives twice the levels you ask for. Or maybe it gives X levels per class your character has. My test char was a wizard/sorc and GiveLevel 1 consistently gave me 2 levels.

Does this mean it will exceed the lvl 20 limit? I would love to play Storm Silverhand or perhaps Elminster's squeeze (can't remember her name ... the something...she kills Red Wizards of Thay for a hobby).

That's a good question. I wouldn't know because I stopped my leveling of the test char at 19.

But how it works is it gives you XP required for levels. So I'm guessing once you reach 20, the XP addition won't level you any more. So my educated guess would say no, you can't go over 20.

Haven't tried, but I suspect that going over lvl 20 is impossible in the game, because in D&D, you would have to implement the epic-rules to go over 20. I suspect we will get those rules in an expansion pack to NWN.

Just came to my mind, as a lot of other rules have been added to NWN with scripting, like in the HC mod, it could be possible for someone to script these epic-rules to NWN modules. I think the lvl in character sheet would stay 20, but you might be able to get those benefits when your exp reached levelling limits.

Level over 20 and Prestige classes

I believe it is possible. Maybe not to officially go over level 20, but every PC has creature slots available to them for weapons and armor. If I wanted to add a prestige class, I would make advancement based on quest completion and a certain existing class level. When the PC completes the quest, he is automatically updated with the special creature attack/armor to simulate increased attack/dmg, special abilities etc.

If you want to see it work, PM me, and when I have it down in the campaing I'm working on, i'll send you to the web site.

By the way: the campaign is about Cyric and a mad grab for power.

I remember that somewhere, probably the official boards, was a mention that those creature-slot powers do not reflect in your character sheet at all, but they are in effect. I was thinking about creating the subraces of Forgotten Realms with their special abilities, but if they don't show it'll be worthless. Especially when some subraces get different attribute-bonuses than the original ones. It would be confusing to track your attributes in a separate place when the character sheet is showing wrong numbers.

Do you have any info on this? Because if it is possible to reflect these changes, the subraces would work. I think that someone has already done such scripts and posted them somewhere, but I haven't had time to check them out.

Alternative way of keeping bonuses noted

If I've given a character a prestige class via a quest, then in that case, I'll just update his/her journal with the proper information, such as:

"With your current advancement as a Holy Smasher, you are now quicker and more knowledgeable with your weapon. You have also gained the ability to resist certain blows. {+1 to hit, +1 Damage, Soak 5/+1}"

There is kinda a good reason for giving yourself levels and kinda not. I beat the game at like level 18 only and that was giving myself like a but ton of XP so I was kinda sad on that note because I was hoping to get my bad ass dmg reduction 20 at level 20 for a monk. I would just go all the way to the last parts and then just for fun get yourself to lv 20 just to enjoy yourself.

Or you can restart the game with your same character.
