I've heard of crashes in the Promenade, especially around nightfall. There are dozens. It could be some video setting, or corrupt file during install, or your soundcard, or the operating system...
That hardly narrows it down, but I've heard of each of those creating a crash similar to the one you're experiencing.
The biggest culprit is '3D acceleration'. Go into the setup and if it's checked on the first screen... turn it off. It's been referred to as the '3D Deceleration box' as it tends to do quite the opposite of what it's supposed to, and figures prominently into dozens of crashes (including the few I've had).

While BG2 worked fine (except for being a bit slow at times) on my Win98 machine I've suffered crashes at least once per 30 minutes on my new WinXP machine, especially in the bridge district (haven't been on the promenade yet, so i don't know if that area crashes regularly as well).
Running the game in higher resolution (above 640x800) seems to make the problems worse. |

I had no problems, but I disabled 3D acceleration and it helped.

I'm thinking of upgrading to XP. Can you think of any other games that ran before but crashed when you installed XP

I'm getting the most God awful lag in BG2. I have no idea why. I have a 1.9ghz, Gforce 4 ti4400, 512mb RAM. I shouldn't lag. I have the latest patches, drivers etc..
It's aggravating. |

I'm betting that 3D is turned on in your BGConfiguration file. On the first screen, deselect the 3D option. It's a terrible, terrible thing that cause much lag. |

I've also experienced crashes with mm8, ultima 9 and (something completely different) Catan. The only game i've seen that runs without any problems so far is the sims. The BGII crashes are the worst, since it's the only game that doesn't just make the game itself crash, but also reboots (!) my system.

Ahhhh... classic video driver conflict symptom. What kind of card do you use, and how old are the drivers for it?

A GeForce 3 Ti 200, just like Rendelius. Both the card and the driver are less than a month old .
Any insight you can give me ? |

First off, like mentioned, go to the configuration option and make sure that the 3d acceleration is turned off on the main page.
Beyond that... you might have to downgrade your detonator drivers to an earlier version because the game is old.
It's been a long time since I've been there... but I think the technical forums at http://www.bioware.com are still in business. I'm sure hundreds of people are running into the same problems...

WINXP is working fine for me |
|
I have been playing BGII with the exp set installed, and besides so otherwise excessive CD-swapping in my CD-RW drive, it has been working fine.
My Ranger (Archer) is now level 9 and no crashes, it does slow SOME when I scroll thru the map to fast, but nothing bad otherwise.
