Spells - Like Gothic 1?

Is the spell system improved in G2? Example: Does control and sleep not work on most creatures? I ended up using just two spells for most of the game in G1 - ice block followed by storm of fire - maybe I just didnt learn the spell system.

As far as I have heard, the greatest change will be that you don't need to load your spells, they will be cast in instant. (except two)
