It is a convention used to make power series expansions work. I guess it kind makes sense ... it you mutlipy nothing nothing times what do you get? No change - thusly the multiplicitive identity function (1). _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

In response to the subject,
I'm open to the idea of the parallel dimensions theory. I'm also open to the idea that it's possible to travel from one parallel dimension to another, which could be interpreted as time travel. If every possibility leads to the creation of a new parallel dimension apart from the ones previously realized, then one could theoretically go back to a previous point in time.
Example: If for every possibility there is an infinite amount of parrallel dimensions then the creation of the earth in the big bang wouldn't have occurred until 50 trillion years later in yet another infinite amount of parrellel dimensions. In this infinite amount of parrellel dimensions there is of course another infinite amount of parrallel dimensions with everything exactly the same in human history as the one we consciously realize. Since this infinite amount of parrallel dimensions is based on a different time period, one would theoretically be going into the future if one could travel from one's current dimension to the one described here.
In the theory of parallel dimensions anything is possible and can be explained by branching off ideas peice by peice towards the one imagined. In this theory nothing can either be proven or disproved. _________________ I am the founder and former leader of a guild in EQ, retired member of The Code in EQ, original member of KOE in AOE2, past Corporal of EVO in MOHAA, respected veteran of UT 2003, a conquerer of all decent games, and an aspiring game developer.

There are two complaints with this view:
1. Given that the universe contains about 10^99 particles and each time one of these quantum entities does one thing (or nothing) instead of another (or something) you'd have a new universe spawned. Assuming that time is roughly quantum at about 1,000 nanoseconds, this means that for each second our universe has existed it has generated (10^99)^12 alternate universes, each of which has generated roughly the same nubmer of alternate universes - all in one second! Couple that with the age of universe at about 5x10^16 seconds. The resulting number of universes is just too big to compute!
2. The theory, while covering all possible basis, explains nothing, and can not be used to glean new information. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

Who would want to travel into different dimensions when there is a >99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999(etc.)% chance you will end up in empty space? Seems like poor odds.

@Vaticide - Good point. One should dimension trot only with an FTL ship. It would also behoove one to check the entrance point so as not to land in the heart of a large sun *grin*. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

If it were possible, I'm sure we'd send robots through first. _________________ I am the founder and former leader of a guild in EQ, retired member of The Code in EQ, original member of KOE in AOE2, past Corporal of EVO in MOHAA, respected veteran of UT 2003, a conquerer of all decent games, and an aspiring game developer.

Assuming we had a reliable return ability that would work if you wanted to waste a whole lot of robots/time on dimensions you don't want to go to. But how would you develop that without being able to cross dimensions reliably to somehow map them? And then the odds of returning to the correct home are 1/infinity. (Including, of course that there would be a near-infinite number of functionally identical dimensions to our own, they would just be a minute proportion) Therefore even if a robot did return there is a chance it is actually a robot from another dimension. I think it is just too confusing and astronomical it is a better idea just not to try.

From what i know, there is no such thing as time travelling, following things however may be possible: At ultra high speeds, time goes faster, so if you travel at near light speed, one day in your rocket equals 16 years one earth, so you would actually be able to reach the nearest star (alpha centauri) in 3-4 days!
There is a theory however, that going beyond light speed resolves in dematerialising, every atom of your body would turn to pure energy. Not nice.
Speeds like these could be reached with anti-matter based engines.
Another possibility for looking in time is one i made up myself: If there would be a way to store every exact position and movement of every atom in the whole universe(!) one would know all chemical reactions that result from this. Including brain activity, because of every choise you make is just a bunch of chemical reactions in your head and body. That way you could simulate the future with an ULTRA HIGH TECH UBER computer, with capacities that wont even be reached in the year of 40.000! And since the computer itself is made up of atoms you will never be able to calculate what your computer itself will do in the future. (you would get a never ending circle) _________________ One blade good, two blade better |

I don't think time travel is possible because I don't think time exists. Time is just an idea; a word that we use to describe evidence of motion. Ask yourself, how do we know that time has passed. Answer: Because something has moved from where it used to be. It may be the hand on a clock, or enery from the sun; but something has to move in order for us to know that time has pased. So what we are calling "time travel" would be the systematic reversal of course of every atom, energy wave, and sub-atomic particle back through the exact same course that it traveled to get to the point in time called "now." As far as we know these particles have no record of where they have been and neither does any other thing possess such a record, except for God himself.
Even if such a record did exist and time could be reversed, no person could go back in time because the particles in his own body would be required in other places. This creates a quandry: 1) The loss of the particles that make up one's own body would prevent him from existing in the past and thus there is no way to produce evidence of the time travel. OR 2) If the all particles reversed course except for those in the time-traveler's body then those particles would not be present where they were at the destination time in the past. This difference means that the "past" that the person traveled to is not truly his past, but rather one that is slightly different. Furthermore, since every object has different particles, each object would travel back to a different past bacause the person/object would retain particles from different "past places" and thus create a different past than would an object just like it. _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Time is a dimension, and thus it could theorietically be possible to travel in more than one direction (forward). The problem is, since we already travel through time with the highest speed possible, it would be hard to travel faster into the future. But travelling backwards could work.
Wormholes exists as tunnels between points in timespace, and it could be possible to use such a thing for travelling to another time (in the future or in the past). |

Sooo...What would be the result of moving sideways through time? Say... 90 degrees to the left? _________________ Always with you what can not be done. Hear you nothing that I say? - Master Yoda
