MMORPGs: First person or third person mode? |
|
This concerns mainly MMOG's (Massively Multiplayer Online Games).
How important is the 1st person mode to to you? Will you select only the games that support 1st person mode or will you play also games that don't support it (even they are made in 3-D).
For example, Realms of Torment will have only 3rd person mode (you see your character all the time).
Also, give some comments what you selected and why?
P.S. The two choices "I mostly play..." mean that if the game supports both which way you prefer. _________________ =Moderator of General MMORPG talk forum=

Btw, for myself, it does not matter how it is, depends how the game is designed.
But if the game supports both, I usually play in third person to see my avatar. For example for DAoC I used first person only in Dungeons to hide my name. _________________ =Moderator of General MMORPG talk forum=

I agree, 3rd person is more enjoyable IMO. But 1st person is more practical, since you don't have you character taking up a good portion of your view. _________________ Like some bold seer in a trance;

I usually choose first person....my friends complain and tell me they are always losing me and tell me to switch to third so I can follow them better and not get lost. _________________ "What are you gonna do? If it's 3D, I want to play in 3rd person. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Third whenever possible... though I do switch to first in dungeons or areas where the camera can get 'lost' or stuck in walls. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Third person for me. The only reason I can give you is because it allows for a better perspective on my surroundings. If I get attacked from behind, I have a better response time with 3rd person than first. It's just a practical choice for MMORPGs. _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=

I chose third person and occasionally first. I like seeing what armor and such i have on my char but as EverythingXen said, when i get to dungeons i get stuck in third and switch to first.

Looks like I'm the only one who does usually 1st person, sometimes 3rd. I feel like I get a more emmersive experience in 1st person, but occasionally I will switch to 3rd to see my avatar, or for various other reasons. If a game is 3rd person only it doesn't bother me.

I'm in 1st person 99% of the time. Sometimes I'll zoom out to 3rd just so I can see my new fancy armor, a new cloak etc. (Referring to DAoC).
One thing I have noticed about people who play in 3rd person is, they are much more likely to agro things when wandering thru an outdoor zone full of baddies. In 1st person mode, your point of view is 20 (game feet) closer to your agro range, so you have more time to see and avoid mobs. But it seems the fellows in 3rd person always wander right into agro range because the mob didn't pop up on their screen as soon (their view is 20 feet further back, thus clipping plane, detail radius, etc. all appear later for 3rd person than 1st).
Think about it Your view is (for example) 20 feet behind your toon in 3rd person view, the game doesn't "cheat" and allow you to see the same mob at the same time as the guy standing right next to you in 1st person mode. The 1st person viewer actually sees the mob 20 feet sooner than you do.
Hope that makes sense _________________ The arrows flew at us so thick as to blot out the sun, so I says to young Angus, "Well, at least now we'll be fighting in the shade." |

I also like 3rd person better than 1st...not only because i like to see my character, but i like being able to see what's on either side of me and directly behind me _________________ "It's good to know the Dude's out there takin it easy for all us sinners" |

If an online game doesn't have both, its not worth buying for me. WHen in a dungeon or house(tight quarters, I want to feel up close and personal with the enviroment.
When out doors or open spaces, and when wearing new items I want 3rd to gt a good look at my uberness. |

My husband and I were just discussing this issue. My first MMORPG was Everquest so I really got confortable with 1st person. I might have done better in 3rd person but I always felt that 1st person was more involving. Easier to become part of that character for RP. As far a PVP, the good thing is you can see others coming from behind to attack you but on the other hand, they can see you coming to attack them. hehe
I am searching for a good MMORPG and very interested in Shadowbane but nervous about the PVP, and the 3rd person was a turn off but I have decided to give it a chance and open my mind to a new type of game. I am just hoping it gives a better game play to me then Dungeon Seige and Neverwinger Nights. I guess all in all, 1st person and 3rd person has it ups and downs and I will see what I like after Shadowbane. Not sure if it has an option or not. Kind of hopes it does. _________________ "Life is like a rocking chair,....it gives you something to do, but does not really get you anywhere." |
