Black screen on startup

Game installed fine - all other games run OK.
But on starting G2 I see "virtual Disk file system" for a while this is followed by a black screen - then nothing. I then need to reboot to restart my PC. This happens everytime I try to run G2.

Any suggestions from you fine people out there??

Brief specs are

Athlon 1800+ XP
WIN 98
DX 9.0
512MB ram
NVID GeForce 4 Ti 4400 128M
Vid driver is 4.13 0001 2832 dated 9/3/3
Disp mode set at 1024 by 768 at 32 bit AA all off
Sound is a SB Audigy
sound driver is 4.12 01 0130 1 20 0030
free drive space 7 gigs +

Is anyone running ok on a similar spec?

I just downloaded the latest vid drivers they are 44.03 but have not yet installed them because everything else runs fine on my system (freelancer morrowind EVE Daoc Neverwinter etc )and I have no particular desire to screw everything up to enable me to run one game.

Yes, a lot of files are created on first startup. Give it a few minutes.
The new drivers are an idea. On the JoWooD boards is somebody with an almost identical config on WinXP. The new detonators + disabled FSAA worked for him.
Is DirectX9 the full version or the beta?

Black screen

Thanks for responses guys.
Yeah I tried leavin it for an hour - but once its on the black screen its all over till rebooted.
Not sure about DX ver it was the one which came with freelancer I think.
any way in DX diag it says its DX 9.0 4.09.000.0900. if that means anything to anyone.

I may try the new drivers - Question ... do you have to wipe off your old vid driver or does the new one overwrite/update the old one???

Yes, PLEASE do... I remember Detonator has an "uninstall" option at Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Also, don't just try the latest drivers. Try ALL different drivers -- some older drivers may be optimized specifically for your card.

And, do not consider reformatting unless you're sure that there is no other option.

You should uninstall your drivers if your installing new ones. You should also clean out the left over pieces with Driver Cleaner. You can get it here:

I know where you're coming from. I've got the same problem. I've heard the solutions. Dump DirectX 9.xx. Just use DirectX 8.xx. Just use DirectX 8.xx!!! So let me guess, every time I want to run Gothic 2, I reload DirectX 8.xx (I've got Windows 98, so I wipe my hard disc and start from scratch), play the game for a bit, and then, oh, I want to play a game that requires DirectX 9.xx. Well slap my thighs, I'll load DirectX 9.xx again!! I think I'll have to give up my day job just to keep this going. Come on, guys, how about a simple patch to end this misery?

By the way, my old computer, PIII, 450MHtz, 128 Mb ram, runs Gothic 2 OK (well, a bit slow, but at least it runs!!!!). Yes, its on DirectX 8.xx, before you ask!!.

In reply to the original (first) post in this thread:-
1. To solve the `Virtual Disk File` system delay - move vdfs.exe out of the Gothic System folder and put it somewhere else (e.g. the root directory).
2. Black screen *may* be solved by editing the Gothic.ini file (change the `playlogovideos` value to zero (instead of 1). This *may* solve your problem - there`s no harm in trying. It also speeds up the loading of the game.
