I've gone through as a merc/dragonhunter because I liked the new camp in G1. Plus, in vanilla G2 at the end of the game a merc has a lot of options for unspent LPs since mana isnt too important. I've also done it militia/paladin because I like to be the "good guy" even though in this game the mercs are just as good as the militia. Never done mage. I think the paladin was easiest.

Played all guilds, but personally I preferred the militia/paladin way... I don't like to wear dresses, and I don't like people who punch each other in the face as a way to say 'hello'.

Haha, for me it's the other way around. I don't like those bossy militia and paladin, who think they're in charge.
My number one is Mercenary/Dragonhunter, and Mage as second (playing one now in NotR).

No doubt my least favorite guild is militia. I don't like to bossed around either. Maybe that is why i usually end up being an arrogant firemagician Though the most often i join the mercaneries, because all the old mates like wolf, lee and gorn are there.

Face it:
- Mercenaries are just brutal idiots that request you kick their asses,
- Fire Mages are juste arrogant cowards hide into their monastery and better to ignore them,
- Paladins are just full idiots who need to have their asses kicked even if they don't request it.

How can you choose any good guild among all that crap?

That said, I played only once each, Fire Mage mainly summoner and 2H fighter with some chapters as 1H fighter, Mercenary 2H Fighter too strong but still very fun, Paladin at first Bow fighter and later 1H and Xbow fighter.

The learning choice I did highly influence my preferences almost as much than the class themselves, but a fighter summoner mage is definitely my prefered class choice even if they got the less good chapter 4.

For your play choices eventually, in general I don't think so. They are the easier to join but that's all:
- They are from far the most confusing guild, it's a garbage between Militia/Paladin, armor providing is garbage not too mention the hours I spend to search the armor improvement for the chapter 4!
- They have just poor few runes, healing is just pratical, no real use, and the arrow is just pratical against very few oponents.
- They don't have the weapons power of the Mercenaries and from far.
- During chapter 4 wich is a critical one they has weaker armor than mercenaries.
- They got free armors but well as the game is done it's only a tiny advantage.

One of the things I love about G1 and G2 and NoTR is that all of the guilds are full of fairly unpleasant people all pushing various agendas and power trips on you.
The first time I played G1, I just loved the feeling that this was a "real" fantasy world rather than the standard good v. evil model that ignores human nature and therefore ends up feeling flat and meaningless.
I played through as a Firemage 1st time and then played G1 and G2+NoTR as a Merc/Dragonhunter...so I could keep up with the NPCs from the first game.
Amazing how PB was able to build some feeling of commitment to NPCs where almost all games (I think) fail.
