Next Gen Development Costs Overstated? @ GamesIndustry.biz

A little off the beaten track but this <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=7225" target="_blank">newsbit</a> at GamesIndustry.biz reporting comments from Mark Rein at Epic might be of interest to those watching the debate on (potentially) increased game prices as next gen console titles take hold:<blockquote><em>"We're going to make our next generation games for only 50 per cent more than our last generation games," Rein bullishly claimed, responding to suggestions from some companies that average next-gen budgets could run as high as $30 million.[...]
<p>"There's no question that the graphics are going to be a huge upgrade," he commented. "You know, people are such snobs, with this 'oh, it's not about graphics' thing. That's such nonsense. It's totally about graphics. What's the difference between the first Metal Gear Solid and the latest Metal Gear Solid? Right, it's - wow, the graphics!"</p></em></blockquote>

He talks like he knows everything, don't like him at all.

And yes if you ask someone who only playes FPS games if the graphics matter - then yes, because the graphics and the physics are the only reasons to play those games.

Sadly, most people I have known who act like graphics don't matter are people who can't afford to keep up with the ever changing graphics market. They are not snobs, just overcompensating perhaps? Just a thought.

Anyway, Slak is right, the guy is a know-it-all.

50% more cost?

If their next-gen console games cost 50% more to develop, does that mean they plan to try and charge 50% more at retail? Because if so, they're in for a rude awakening. I don't see many gamers paying $75 per game.

Phantasy Star 4 for the genesis cost $90 dollars at release, and people gladly payed the price. Don't underestimate people's addiction to gaming
