NWN and defraging my system?

I have run defrag three times and it seems to be having a problem with the NWN files so my alert still says I need to do it. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how to solve? Thanks in advance.

Norton has never burped when I clean up the partition I have NWN installed on. I don't remember any large blocks of read-only there either. Sounds weird to me.

Me too. I used windows disk defrag and nortons both and I still can't get it up past 96%. I was getting 98 every time, and I only got the 96 after doing it the three times. When I run the disk check it says the NWN files cannot be defragmented. I don't get it.

You can try running scandisk and seeing if it shows any problems. If there's something wrong with the disk, that might be creating the problem.

I did that and it said the disk files are fine. I don't know any other tricks to try. This is strange. If no one else has had it then it is something in my system that I am missing and I guess I need to start digging more.

One thing I can tell you is that Norton won't always get you to 100% (I assume the same is true of Windows Defrag). With system files and read-only's, there's always some files that just won't play nice. Sitting between 96% and 98% is pretty good, all things considered.

Maybe it is the fact that I have moved farther in the game and more exec files ect. are being accessed than were before. 96 may be it for now. I will check a few other things. As long as I know it's not some clich with the game that I didn't know about then it is my poor aging system that may be starting to moan under the weight of the Neverwinter sky.

Hrm... So, it's not a bad cluster hanging it up then. And I assume you've turned off all other programs, even antivirus programs. Time to dig.

After doing some research on this, I've found that many seem to have the same type of problems with pesky files that don't want to defrag. I've seen solutions ranging from running defrag in safe mode to just using a third-party defragger like Diskeeper.

I'd recommend trying it out in safe mode first and seeing if that works out for you.

Thanks Val, I'll try that tomarrow. I've played with this thing on and off all day so I need a break. I haven't noticed any problems so far, so it 96 is all I get with NWN installed, I can live with it. As you can tell I'm not the most computer literate in the world, so thanks all for the help.

I'm satisfied with anything above 90% defragged. Honestly, it's no big deal. You probably wouldn't notice a hit in system peformance even if the drive remained 25% fragment after defrag, instead of 5 or 6.

Thanks Xen. I was just used to keeping it at around 98 for so long I got worried something was wrong. But considering how the NWN files are bunched for each mod it makes sence now that they can't be defraged and would make the sensor drop some. I think I'll leave well enough alone unless I start seeing some problems with the machine here. Thanks everyone for the input.
