The skill that disapeared.....What happend???

Something strange happened to me.....

I have learned the sneak skill a long time ago, but just now as I was playing the game, I found out that I no longer have the skill.

Is this a bug in the game?
Do I have to learn the skill again?

You are not the first person to have this problem. I know of at least two others who have reported the same thing happening. One of them in a rather recent post.

This seems like a legitimate bug --but nobody can pinpoint when it happens because they never notice their sneak skill is gone until much later -- after the damage has been done.

I think it may be triggered by the learning or upgrading (adding points to) of a certain skill which causes sneak to get wiped out. Like say, for example, you have sneak and then you learn the hunting skill "take shadowbeast horn". Perhaps something in the code which gives you that certain skill wipes out sneak by accident. If everyone that has had their sneak dissapear could post all the skills they have learned, maybe we could come up with something in common to narrow down.

Of course, it may have nothing at all to do with other skills. Hell, anything
is possible with software as complicated as the Gothic games.

Yes, it's a bug and annoying one, hopefully the patch, about what I have seen talks but nothing certain, will fix it. Happens to few people, me included. I posted long time ago my suspicion as how it happens, but sadly I have never noticed it soon enough to be certain when it occured. Maybe one day I will specifically try to track it down. I have reported it to PB as well, not sure how helpful my report was as I had no "testcase", so to say.

From when I'm sure I had the skill to the time it was gone, I "learned" the following (in that order):

1. Learned Two Handed from Wulfgar (2 x 5 points)

2. Trained my strength at Harad (1 x 5 points)

3. Prayed at a shrine of Innos and gained 1 point of strength

After 1 and 2 I was out in the wilderness and fought alot of monsters, incl. some zombies and skeletons.

AHA!

I was one of the others elkston mentioned, and I realized I lost my sneak skill a while after I had prayed at a shrine. I hadn't gotten any recent upgrades, so I think the shrines have something to do with it.

Funny thing this missing sneak skill -- although I have not had this problem thus far in Gothic 2, I DID have the exact same thing happen to me in the FIRST Gothic! Apparently whatever the bug is, it is inherent in the programming for both games.

I experienced a similar problem with my one-handed skill. I lost 10 points of one-handed skill (went from 30 to 20) when I gained a level. I don't know why it happened or what triggered it.

Can it be that when you pray at a shrine, you pay 100 gold AND a skill (-points), to gain ex. strength?
It wouldn't make any sense...But maybe.

Just a thought.

Well, if any of you haven't noticed yet, when I look at the Char. screen, the skill of acrobatics is gone also. Now I don't know if you can still get it later in the game because I just purchased Gothic II about a week ago, I am now headed into the valley of mines. I haven't been playing it all that much because I still have to get a feel around the town and where everything is.

No acrobatics in G2, unfortunate. I liked being able to leap from tall rocks in a single bound.

Maybe the act of praying is taken as you wanting to be a "good" person, and "good people don't sneak around do they? LOL

CMCKJ50 ---> Good people do sometimes have to sneak....Ex. away from the enemy when they are to weak (them self...not the enemy).

Sneaking is not a bad act in itself...So as long as you don't sneak to do something bad, it should be okay.

Just wanted to add that I think Sir LoneWolf is onto something with the praying. It is quite plausible that this is triggering the bug because praying may case a stat increase and thus access your character record. Any code that permanently modifies character info should be considered first when looking for this bug.

Interestingly enough, I acquired Acrobatics (without the skill being listed) in the GII add-on after I had finished its main quest.

Did you pray at the shrine of Innos after the Seekers had come? Pyrokar will inform you that they have desecrated some of the shrines, so don't pray at them. That might be what happened.
