GF3s haven't been made in a while so I guess your only option is to hit Ebay. A GF3 is pretty light on grunt these days, so you might want to consider a new card so it can play the latest titles.
The cheapest option for decent card in Aus is a Geforce 4 Ti 4200 but virtually anything new will do the job for you except a Geforce 4 MX (eg., MX440 / MX440se) - it has the same limitations as your current card. The more you pay, the powerful it's likely to be. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

For that price i hope it is a new one.
This i found at www.informatique.nl ( a pc store in Bergschenhoek near Rotterdam)
Asus V9520 Geforce FX 5200 Magic, 128Mb, TVout for ?77
Asus V9520 Geforce FX 5200, 128Mb, DVI, TVout for ?96
Asus V9520 Geforce FX 5200, 256Mb, DVI, TVout for ?119
Asus V9520 VideoSuite Geforce FX 5200,128Mb,2xDVI for ?125
Creative 3D Blaster GF FX5200, 128Mb, Retail for ?86
Hercules 3D Prophet 9200, 128Mb DDR, DualD, TVout for ?95
Sapphire Radeon 9200 Atlantis, 128Mb DDR,DVI,TVout for ?90
(might give some people with better knowledge the dutch price range)
If you can find them for those prices there, then you can find even some cheaper ones. _________________ The original RED poster (retired now)

If all you want to do is get a DirectX 8.x compliant card (that is, you're not looking for substantial gains in performance), then a Geforce FX5200 or Radeon 9200 will do. An older (yet faster) Geforce 4 Ti4200 will serve as well, if you can find it cheap (nVidia stopped produced it, so prices on that card seem to be going up). _________________ "Tree stuck in cat. If you want a Geforce III consider getting a GeForce IV mx, they're still around and about the same as a GeForce III in terms of capabiilties. _________________ The Poster Previously Known As NeptiOfPovar |

Completely wrong. Compare Dhruin´s post above. A GeForce 4 MX is nothing more than an overclocked GeForce 2 MX. It´s still a DirectX7 card.
A GeForce FX 5200 is also crappy. It´s NVidia´s new low end card.
IMO the best options are buying a GeForce 4 Ti from ebay for 50-80$ or buying a new card for about 150$. Details on chip and brand will have to be examined. The cheaper choice has better backwards compatibility, the newer cards are faster and support DirectX9.
Either choice will give you a significant boost since your current card is slow as a snail. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Yet it's still faster than the one he has right now. Pretty much any new card he buys right now will be faster than that, even a Radeon 9200SE. How much faster, though, is determined by the amount he's willing to spend. _________________ "Tree stuck in cat. Firemen baffled."--Simcity 3K

A couple remarks: don't expect to play the latest games at 1024x768x32 with all the details on with that card. Second, it's DirectX 8,1 compliant, not DirectX 9.0. What this means is that it still has the pixel shaders that PoP needs, but it won't, for example, be able to use some of the features of HL2 that are DirectX9 specific. The FX5200 is DirectX 9 compliant, but it's so slow at it that it's practically useless. _________________ "Tree stuck in cat. Firemen baffled."--Simcity 3K

That card is a relabeled Radeon 8500. It´s clearly slower than a GeForce 4 Ti. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

The Radeon 8500 was relabelled as the Radeon 9100. The 9200 is actually a slower version.
But, if he can't find a GF4, the 9200 is still faster than a GF2MX. _________________ "Tree stuck in cat. Firemen baffled."--Simcity 3K

Don't buy a 256Mb card if the same money will buy you a 128Mb card with as faster GPU - you simply won't see an advantage. GF4 Ti 4200 / 4800se are still fairly common down here and dirt cheap...but perhaps we're getting used to dump old stock. I'm not a fan of the FX 5600 but you should be able to find a cheap model for just a little more (based on our prices and converting to euros). It's slower than a GF4 Ti but it's a current model and faster than the 9200. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |
