well you still have freedom in thief('course less than gothic) you can decide what to do once you are in a house or castle and the interface is the closest to the one of gothic that i've found.
I've tried arx, is good , but to me the interface is more similiar to a shot'em-up than a rpg.Still it is a good game

By far the game that is closest to Gothic's style of game is a little gem from 1999 named Outcast.

The official website for the game is HERE, and some reviews HERE.

Looking at the above sites, you might write it off for appearing so different in style and, heck, genre than the Gothic series, but if you look beyond the fact that it's a sci-fi game, you'll quickly see numerous links to the Gothic series in it's gameplay: A large, open-ended world to explore, non-linearity in missions, "living" npc's who aren't just standing around, but actually have stuff to do, their own lives to live...etc.

I believe I should also add that this game has one of the single greatest soundtracks you are bound to hear in a video game.

You can download the demo of the website, but you'll have to do some searching to find the full game: It was sort of overlooked by most gamers, despite it's success among critics.

Anyway...I'd better step down before I start sounding like a sales person.

Some of the other games I have had in mind have already been mentioned:

The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard: It seems that when people ask for similar games to the Gothic series, the standard response is to say Morrowind. While an excellent RPG in it's own right, it is this other game from the Elder Scrolls universe that is probably a better recommendation, if you're looking very specifically at how similarly the game is played.

@ Jaz: Nope. I'm pretty sure in the English versions of Gothic and Arx the actor is different. It's been a while since I played Arx, so I could be wrong but I'll be observant of that the next time I play.

Yes, that's what I wrote.
I heard the English language version of Arx was dubbed by the cast who also did the English Thief games.

I think you might be getting mixed up with another game Daedalus - as far as I know Dungeon Lords isn't due for release until 2005.
(I could be wrong too, I mean, how many games with 'Dungeon' in the name are there?)

And to answer mookmaster: It seems from what I've read that the game has about the same linearity as Gothic, e.g. multiple choices for dialogue, slight plot variation based on choices, but ultimately a pre-scripted tale. Anyway, that's what this topic is about after all... games similar to Gothic.
(Incedentaly I have this strange hunch that Dungeon Lords is going to be closer to Baldur's Gate than it will be to Gothic.)

Ah, yes. Dungeon Siege. It's basically Diablo. Not my cup of tea, but I hear a lot of people like it.
@Jaz: Arx and Thief have different voice actors. Thats just a rumor. Stephen Russell is Thief and Steven Russell is Arx.

Wow... He's pretty talented. I only see one other name I recognized, but he was from T3. There could be others I suppose... Kudos Jaz!
Contributing to the topic though, many people have already mentioned Ultima 9, and I concur with that one. I would also recommend Deus Ex. True it's an FPS, but it has some role-playing elements to it. The story though, that is top notch. You can make choices that alter the story, and you don't even know you've made a choice!

See? Exactly what I mean - too many games with 'Dungeon' in the name. We get all mixed up!
