The "Has Become an X2 Thread Despite Me" Thread. |
|
Do you know.... I was sure we had a forum here for "Freelancer". I must be getting older than I thought. Never mind, I shall ask my questions here as I'm fairly sure that this Badger won't be able to spit in the room without hitting a dozen Freelancer Vets.
Fresh from the fish in the face that was the review telling me that “X2” (for which I have held my breath for over a year) would run on my pc like a chunky beast, who having studied at chunky university, got a degree in chunky with honours!
And in accordance with my new “finish my back catalogue” policy.
And resisting the temptation to reinstall “Edge of Chaos” at this time. (Whose acquaintance I look forward to making again in the future)……..
I have reinstalled “Freelancer” (Huzzah!)
I completed my first mission for the “Wilma Dearing” suited Juni and I then set off to explore a little of the New York system(So good they named it twice.) and make a name for myself with some of the locals.
I killed a few pirate types, chilled out a little, had a few drinks. Then I decided that it was time to go see Juni again to get my second mission. First she told me that she would give me the codes for the jump gate I would need to use to catch the bad guy. Then she told me that if I got back in one piece she would give me ALL the codes for ALL the jump gates!
This strikes me as a strange move on the part of the developers. Wouldn’t you assume that they would feed you the codes one at a time as you completed subsequent missions? Ah Well.
I was rewarded for accepting the mission, by advancement in the story line. The chap who owes me money on Manhattan, is whisked away by uniform Wearing, Dart Hurling, Cattle Prod Brandishing Goons! When I try to intervene in the cut scene, my soft bits are introduced to a few volts of “Leeeeave it” juice from a cattle prod. ( I was warned that aliens might want to probe me, but this…?)
All the time being watched by the Great, Great, Great, Great….. erm… Great Grandson of Cancerman from the “X Files”. It might be just me, but they are so obviously setting this chap up as a baddie, that he’s just got to be a goodie!
Ah yes… First time around I was so busy trying to get out of New York, that I didn’t take the time to explore properly. This time I will! I am explorer, hear me roar! Already I have found a mysterious area thick like winter vegetable soup with mines and at its heart… a moon? Wait, that’s no moon. I’ve got a bad feeling about this! An unknown jump gate? Area 21?
I remember hearing a rumour from a Barman.. “If you get past the mines, you won’t get past the navy.” Which would seem to indicate that there IS a way past the mines. Well I’ve been round the zone and I’ve been over and under the zone. I’ve found how quickly those mines can spoil your whole day… but I’ve not seen an entrance. Should I forget it until later in the game?
Well I’ve no more time to type as I’m being told I have to move on. After all, I don’t own this keyboard, but I’ve got an understanding with the people who do.

We petitioned for a Freelancer forum, but never got one. They say the memory is the second thing to go, and I can't seem to remember the first.
Too bad Gig's gone MIA- she was a huge Freelancer junkie. I got pretty deep myself (unusual, since I don't usually do the space sim genre), making a living looking for derelicts after the main story was done. In fact, it's because of Freelancer's limitations that I got interested in X2. I don't remember the details of your rig beyond that it was a step behind mine- X2 is definitely hard on the hardware. It runs well enough for me (Athlon 1800XP, 512 RAM, GF3 128MB), 15fps or so, occasionally turning into a slideshow.
Don't worry about that area beyond the mines. [ominous voice of foreshadowing +4]You'll see it in good time.[/voice]
Spoiler:
There's an area on the east side of New York that has 3 derelicts in it. One contains some very expensive cargo that will make your financial life much easier. There's some tough bandits in that region, though.

Disregard everything that dteowner says, it is all LIES LIES LIES!!! DIRTY LIES!!!
The only way to get help with this situation is to mail me the game so I can play it in its entireity and then send it back to you, at which point I will be able to help you with your problem. Anything that anyone else says is a lie!

What a good idea! I own a huge number of games, but I've actually bothered to complete only about 10-15 of them. I'd love to go back through my collection and play them through, but I suspect that many of them won't even run on my current computer.
I wanted to buy Privateer 2 the moment I saw a friend playing it - I played and loved the original Privateer (but, um, never completed it) and the sequel looked even better. But it disappeared from retail too soon, and it was a while before I found it in a second-hand software shop. I took my Holy Grail home, loaded it up, and blasted off into the great unknown. Regrettably it ran way too fast and was never touched again. I own a large number of games that have never even been installed!
Come to think of it, my last two full-price game-related purchases must have been Bloodmoon and SimCity4; the next two games I'll buy will be Doom3 and Half-Life2. I used to aquire games like a magpie acquires shiny things, and for much the same reason. I wonder at what point this turned into almost complete indifference? _________________ Charlie Dobbie

You should be able to find it pretty cheap by now, Vaticide. Then you could have a contest of manhoods with Badger to see who was better able to ignore their real life in order to complete the game. With the way the game is structured, it begs to be played in 3 sessions of about 10-15 hours each.
But then again, I might be lying.... _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

No, you're not lying. I pretty much played the campaign through over a weekend and perhaps got three hours of sleep in three days. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

It was good cfm. At least as far as I played it before defecting to the next shiny thing. But forget it now and instead buy "Independence War2:Edge of Chaos." It's massive, compelling, beautiful to look at.... oh and I'm pretty sure you can get it on budget now. In much the same way as you'd probably sleep with Betty Rubble, but be thinking of Wilma, I'm now playing Freelancer, but my heart belongs to Edge of Chaos. (Particularly since X2 is destined to remain an elusive temptress!)
@dte: Thanks for rubbing it in mate! you've got X2 have you? Enjoying it are you?!
@^$~~*!!! oh... and of course the horse you rode in on. Erm....... couldn't give me a low down on it could you?

Well, Badger, Dhruin is the resident X2 encyclopedia. The ultimate blame for my ability to taunt you lies at his feet.
I haven't gotten very far into it, to be honest. I got sidetracked pretty quickly when I picked up HotU. Combine the shiny new game with my current case of ADD and throw in my chronic "restart-itus", the end result is that the furthest I've gotten is mission 7. Based on my best projections, considering that I've visited about 15% of the known universe, I figure I've not even gotten started. The good news is that I've strengthened my resolve, and this 4th attempt at HotU that I started a couple days ago WILL be the one that I stick with all the way to the end. Really. Seriously. I mean it this time.
Based on what I know so far- "My, what a pretty iceberg I see. Let's sail over so I can touch it!"- here's what I can tell you. I had one big problem with Freelancer. They say you can pursue a variety of professions once the main story is done, but it just ain't so. Want to be a pirate? Fine. Take your fighter and go shoot up a cargo convoy or two. OH, you actually want to be able to TAKE the booty you've just liberated? Well, his 300 units of cargo won't fit terribly well into your 60 unit hold, now will it. I know! Get yer own freighter and all will be good. Now, keep in mind that you're moving just slightly faster than the universe's rate of contraction. Those escorts that your fighter splatted with just the shortest of bursts? Gonna be a real problem now. Avast, bugger the piracy! Unfortunately, life in the merchant marine ain't much better. Interstellar politics? Yeah, right. When all is said and done, Freelancer is about hopping in your fighter and killing things. It does that remarkably well, IMO, but I longed for more. I'm an engineer- I must micromanage!
X2 seems to have gone the other direction, based on that tiny hunk of ice bobbing in the water (and what's that scraping I hear?). Perhaps it will change once I get deeper into the game, but right now I'm the fly on the universe's windscreen. Grannys buzz by me in their interstellar equivalents of a Cooper Mini, give me the finger, and put their black knee boot firmly in my caboose. And for what? That all-out barrage I sent her way didn't so much as mar her paintjob. This ain't no shooter, no sir. This is an economic simulation. There's much to manage. Once I've had my way with HotU and ended the affair, I'll settle down for an extended fling with X2. I think it will be a long relationship. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

I just found out today that my housemate worked on Privateer 2. He had to make a series of casts of Clive Owen's head.
Not sure how you'll all benefit from that information, but there ya go. |

Well........ ya gotta have a hobby right?
@dte; Thanks for the lowdown. I re-read my magazine review and I DO have the minimum specs...... hmmmmmm. Nah! I'll wait until it comes out on budget.
A/ I can't afford it now anyway.
B/ My lovely friends across the pond are doing their usual stirling job of being unpaid bug testers for the developers and by the time the game is released here and comes down in price, it might well be patched to be more fluid. (quote from the mag: "The developers are determined to patch it all the way to smoothness")
@ All... Ok then. The whole thrust of the Freelancer missions I'm seeing at the moment, seems to be;
Find...... the Rogue.
See ..... the Rogue.
Kill ...... the Rogue.
Given that the Rogues are now understandably a little upset with the Badger. (The little slidy bar all the way to the left can't be good right?) Will it ever be possible to dock with the Hidden Rogue base I just found in "The Badlands"? I'm assuming that this is the only place in the New York system where I might be able to stock up on illegal goods and make like a smuggler.

The more things stay the same, the more they change. Beds make for circumstantial strangefellows. Errr...

Whisper sweet nothings into Juni's ear eh? Well it's a dirty job but someone has to do it. That Juni eh? "What a fox" as my friend in Chicago would say.
Something of the Orient about her me thinks and I've always had a thing for Oriental girls! Ever since at 14 I had a crush on the girl behind the counter at the local take away and........ ah, but that's another story.

Well... you don't need to do missions and make enemies of the Rogues, you can do missions and make enemies of the Xenos which is much better and I'll tell you why. Every system has one or more groups which are called "Wildcard Factions". These factions have no allies or affiliations so conflicts with them will only effect your reputation with that group. The wildcards do have enemies though and as your reputation decreases with them, it will increase with all of their enemies.
Wildcards are in Freelancer specifically to let you balance your rep card. In Liberty, the wildcard factions are the Xenos and the Junkers--not the Rogues! If your rep is bad with the these butt clowns then it will also be bad with the Outcasts and the Lane Hackers! This will make doing trade runs absolutely miserable and, as you discovered, make you unwelcome at their bases. Believe me, you want to be on that base in the Badlands. It has the best ship upgrade in New York and is also the best trade run in NY. Getting a load of H-fuel at Fort Bush, dropping it off at Buffalo--picking up the illegal goods that you mentioned and dropping them off on Manhattan is worth three missions at level 4.
As far as wildcards go, you must play nice with the Junkers because you can procure unique items on Junker bases sometimes. The Xenos, however, are in Liberty for the sole purpose of target practice as far as I can tell. If you take missions make sure that the Xenos are the targets. If you kill enough Xenos you will make yourself neutral with the Rogues and with them you will also be neutral with the Outcasts and Lane Hackers. That will make exploring the Badlands much easier and you must explore the Badlands completely, there are treasures there that will greatly help you in your adventure by offering you higher level weapons than you can buy right now! The same is true for Texas and California (the best ship trade in Liberty is in California!)... explore them very thoroughly!
Oh! And a heads up-- make sure that you don't land on Manhattan after you reach level five until you're finished exploring Liberty (explore all of New York... not just the Badlands! )

Hey thanks Gig, that was great in depth stuff.
Silly question though... "Xenos" Which incidentally I thought was a cough syrup! I see lots of gossip about these chaps being about, but the missions I'm offered all seem to be about Rogues. I don't remember seeing any targeting Xenos. Am I missing the B Obvious?
I'm level six now. Woo Hoo! Poor Juni looks as though she is being setup and I expect I won't be far behind. I'd like to say I'll steer clear of Manhattan now you've given me a heads up... but let’s face it I'll HAVE to go there now to see why! I'll save before I do though.

Missions refresh when you leave the dock and redock... eventually you will get Xenos missions. They're worth being target practice, though one freeform game (set myself up as server and logged into my own computer) I joined them and wreaked much havoc on the universe as a whole. Though joining the Rogues/Lane Hackers/Outcasts is a much healthier way to be a pirate... Xenos are just murderers.
And if you blow apart a supertransport and don't have enough cargo hold space to carry home the booty... well... that's what you get for being a one-man pirate in a space fighter.
No, if thar's booty to be had in space (not the kind from Risa) it be in multiplayer, ya-har. Two or three guys in fighters with one guy in one of the best armed transports in the game jumping cargo ships at jump points and making a mint! The fighters blow up the other fighters while the transport (some of which can be incredibly armed and armored) just does the incredible death-blossom turret thing as support. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
