As Jaz already rightly noted "true RPG" is very flexible concept. I absolutely agree that the most "true" RPGs are PnP ones. But then you cannot just say that those CRPGs that resemble PnP the most are "true CRPGs". Not at all. There is something else, and this "else" constantly leads us all here to endless but pleasant discussions of what CRPG is better and "more true" in a way.

I'd suggest that probably some of the qualities of "true" CRPG would be: certain freedom of action, atmosphere that helps you to play your role in the game, interesting and complex character development system. And there are certainly more, much more.

To Sherrin:

Yes, I played Thief 2 and loved it. You need only look at my signature to verify this!!! :-; I also played a few of the user mods for the game and some of them are very high quality ( for example, "The 7th Crystal").

I did play through about half of Summoner last year. I can't recall but I think I got distracted by another game or something IRL. It was okay I guess. But the camera angles bugged me a bit. I don't know If I'll ever get back to finishing it...

Regarding Wizardy 8, I"m with Corwin. It's a great game. Really one of the best in recent years along with the Gothics. If you're into complex character development and turn based combat, then Wizardry 8 is a shining example.

Regarding the "true RPG":

Well, like others have said, Pen and Paper is the purest example. I haven't played in that style in years, so I'll comment on the qualties I look for in computer games before I classify them as "strictly CRPGS":

1. Some form of character development or advancement. It can be complicated (Wiz 8, Morrowind) or simple ( Gothic, Dungeon Seige). But it has to be *there*.

2. A persistent form of inventory.

3. Exploration and interaction with the game world is the major focus of the game. (This includes any combination of combat, treasure hunting, questing, or talking to folks)

4. A story that drives your actions. The story should NOT, however, be so intricate and complicated that it impedes on freedom of play. The story is there to give you an overall sense of purpose, color the characters and environment, and SOMETIMES (but only at certain key points) drive the direction of the game.

That's it! As long as a game has all of these qualities, even in small amounts, I'll consider it an RPG.

Which is better: Planescape Torment or BG2: SOA?

I originally thought 2D RPG's were crap, and was a 3d freak after playing the likes of Gothic 2 etc.

However, I can tell you, no 3D rpg of current comes close to the lelvel of detail and gameplay as a game like BG2!

I'm playing Might & Magic 9 now. With the official patch and the fan patch, the game works fine.

The outdoor play is kinda weak, but the dungeons are loads of fun.

You might find it refreshing after seeing that Gothic 2 and Morrowind offer very little for dungeon play (small caves are not dungeons).
