Uh... next one? Has there already been a canning of a large MMORPG?
I mean, most of these will be around for AT LEAST a couple of more years.
MAYBE Ultima, since it's so old, but even THAT will take a long time.

Yes one online MMO has already fallen. Does anyone know about it...no. Because it wasn't successful, hence the shutdown of it. I can't really remember what it was...so I'm not going to attempt to guess because I don't want anyone thinking the wrong thing. But yes a MMO has been canned.

Earth and Beyond is almost canned. The company that made it, Westwood, which was based in Las Vegas, was shut down a whole year ago. I think some big publisher bought it up since then, but still Earth and Beyond has a very small playerbase and i wouldnt be surprised if it gets canned soon.

Asherons Call 2 has a very small playerbase and hence a good chance at cannage too...

In fact i just discovered that Earth and Beyond still exists, but it is so low budget that they dont even want to invest in an expansion pack. They say they have designs for it, but that they dont actually plan on it. I will let you draw your own conclusions.

AC2 will survive, I believe. They're putting enough money in it right now... with a good expansion set, I believe they can keep it going for at least a few more years.

One that got canned in the early days was actually Meridian 59. Currently it's up and running again thanks to the folks at NearDeathStudios though. But it initially got canned.

The one I had my doubts about, is Neocron. I liked the game though, but terrible population numbers.

The only reason ac 2 is still around is because microsoft has deep pockets. The game would have already died if not for Microsoft.

I bet on AC2, maily because I doubt there will be an expansion pack (the makers of the original are working on both MiddleEarth Online and D'n'D Online).
Btw, I believe that Westwood are not closed, but renamed and combined with several more EA studios and are now knows as EALA

I'm willing to assume several will shut down with in the next year. I'll list them starting with what I think is most likly 1st, down to the "last mmog standing".

1. Earth and Beyond (Freelancer did better and thats not saying much.)

2. Mimesis Online (I'm surprised it's still alive, I admire them for hanging on, but the MMOG reaper is coming boys and girls.)

3. Shadowbane (I was really excited about this one, talk about a huge disappointment.)

4. Asheron's Call 1 and 2 (If they would of stuck to a similar model as AC1, they could of done so much better. Now it's just a matter of time. I think AC1 will survive a little while longer but not much. Their numbers are also looking grim.)

5. Eve Online (God, I was so looking forward to this game. One of my biggest letdowns )

6. Neocron (I had fun in the beta but it's lacking in so many things that could of made it so much better. I think it'll last until this time next year, but not much longer than that.)

7. Sims Online (Lots of disappointment here. I think by the end of 2004 TSO will fizzle away into the history books. The Sims 2 will be the worlds salvation lol )

8. Ultima Online (It's with a heavy heart that I put this here, but after almost 7 years, the worlds longest running MMOG is showing serious signs of old age, EA is poised to release another Ultima based MMOG soon, which unfortunatly, I think will ultimatly spell the beggining of the end of our beloved UO.)

You can be sure any of the several lesser known MMOG's will belly-up like Astonia 3, Blade Mistress, Dransik, Jumpgate, Underlight, etc..

I know I have left many out, but damn it I'm tired of typing so I'm going now.
