Fixed my memory leak symptoms! |
|
I have been tweaking this and tweaking that since the game came out and Finally I believe I have fixed my memory leak like problems. I read a post on the official forums earlier today about turning off your sound acceleration fixed the memory leak problem. I tried it and it works "for me". I played 5 hours straight tonight with no slow-downs or lag , just sweet Morrowind Goodness. I shut down and restarted just in case it was a fluke, but no , it just kept running sweet. So to the person on the official forum who turned me onto this, thank you man , wish I could remember ya , but thank ya!
The official site seems to be down as usual. I'll post this there tomorrow I guess. _________________ >>>Kill 'em all , let the gods sort 'em out!<<< |

Do you do that in the options menu or what? |

You do it in your DX diagnostics panel.
Go to start/run and type in dxdiag
Then click on the sound tab, and reduce the sound acceleration. Dropping it one notch fixed my crashes, sounds like I might need to play with dropping it further to see if that fixes the leak. (hits me bad after about 90 min) _________________ Proprietor of

Another option would be to get a RAM-release program. I particularly like RAMturbo because its small and has a very good sweep you can do before launching a memory-hungry program (no more having to reboot for a clear system) I used it with Win98 and was surprised to find it was clearly the BEST of those I tested for XP as well. You can download a trial here.

I'm suggesting this because I rely on sound to alert me to enemies too much to want to play without it. |

I still get all the sounds that I'm used to , I play on the LOW setting in the options menu. Turning my sound acceleration to its lowest setting just cured my memory leak symptoms. It had no other effect that I can seeor hear.
I used those memory programs myself. Have Rambooster and Cacheman. There's just no need to use them now. I can play hours straight with no slow-down or lag. It's just....Good! _________________ >>>Kill 'em all , let the gods sort 'em out!<<< |

Turning off sound acceleration has no effect on the sounds being there or not. You will lose things like 3d sound and EAX and A3d, but Morrowind doesn't use any of that, so it doesn't matter. However, you will likely notice in other games that do use Sound Accelleration that you will not have it. _________________ Midiboy

Ya morrowind does use 3d sound. I have 5.1 surround and when things are behind me i hear them behind me. Go near a torch and turn around and test it. Plus you have a 3d sound option in the game. If you lower the acceleration you will lose surround sound but if you dont have surround sound then it doesnt matter if you turn accel off. Another thing you can try is to reduce the sample rate instead. |

Tuning down DXSound & disabling my video card (ATI Rage Pro2k) V-sync cleared up most of my lag issues. Previously 'quick' saving a game could take up to a minute. After making those changes, quicksaving took about 15 seconds. |
