I never played as mage, but now is when you see Xardas unless you have missed something else you need to do first. I can't think of what it would be.
Go to Xardas and he should mess with the sword, while you go loot his sunken tower. Then back to Xardas again. You should get the quest to activate the sword now. Do that only after you have gone to new camp and learned all you need to. This will be your last chance. Then follow the obvious from there out.

I have the quest for powering up the sword already, so I'm now gonna go back to the game and try it with the rune in it as it don't work when I take it out. thanks busloads for your help |

Whooo Hooo.
Done it, at last I finished it.... the last shaman had a glitch and wasn't saying the right thing so I could go back to Xardas and complete getting rid of the b*******. and those frigging templars, it was a piece of cake after that.
Now onto the next game, a good old sherlock holmes with no fighting,
