What is the thing on the right side in this screenshot?

It looks like a octopus or mushroom.

Nice one again, Rend .

I know I should probably post this to the press copy question thread but since this part of the preview is world related I think it's not too far off-topic if I ask about monster respawn behavior here.
How is it done and how does it work? Is it kept at a "natural" level like in Gothic or is it more like in M&M where every monster is going to be found at the exact same spot after a certain time span has elapsed? Or should there even be no respawn at all? And a last one: is there a difference between overland monster respawn and dungeon monster respawn?

What I noticed is that lesser monsters (wildlife) respawns daily, and they can be found in about the same place, since they wander around a bit.

Thanks
That sounds OK, even though daily may be a bit too often. Do you get XP for killing wildlife, i.e. deer, frogs, butterflies or whatever stuff there is?

No - you don't EVER get experience for something. The system is skill based. The more you practice skills, the better you get. So killing things will make your weapon skills rise - but don't expect that to happen too much from killing crabs or stuff like that. This may be ok in the beginning, but once you are better, these small foes won't help you too much

So, what you are saying is that our skills raise faster with certain monster. That means some monster are worth to kill more than others. Although you don't get XP, you get faster skill advancement.

Did I get it right?

Hehe, see how long I've stayed away from any Morrowind news to not be spoilt?

However, I have a request for you, Rend. Could you please test if it is possible to raise your skills by e.g. casting fireballs at trees or other useless actions? I mean, I wouldn't make use of that exploit but it would be pretty cool if there were not even the temptation of "illegal" character advancement .

Why should that be 'illegal'? If cops had to train gun shots in real people instead of targets, that would be 'illegal'

Anyway, in Daggerfall you could raise your skills by throwing fireballs agains't a wall, for example. And it has logic.

You can level up by repeating the fireball spell... there are only a few things that could be a problem:

Magicka
Boredom
The fact that gaining combat skills while not fighting has been minimized

I mean if you want to level up in a cheap manner, just pick Athletics, get two pieces of tape. Tape down the forward key and the right "spin" key (not strafe), and let your guy run while you are away.

sounds a bit like in Wiz8 where you can practice lockpicking forever on that vault door in Arnika...it works, slowly, but who has the patience do it in a game like MW???? I'd rather be out and about!!

And, it makes sense, logically.....if you were a mage, casting a fireball at a puddle is, magically speaking, no different than casting one at a golem... so, both should increase your magic skill..

I don't see that as an exploit at all...

Aah, OK, that's what I wanted to hear. Thanks, sauron.
Talking about magicka and the minimization of gaining combat skills while not fighting, of course . I'm sure there's enough "kewl d00dz" out there who wouldn't mind a little boredom as long as they could show off screenshots everywhere on the net with a character that has been maxed out by fighting windmills like Don Qixote .
