It would be nice to use some siege weaponry in G3, like in Enclave. WOuld be cool to destroy the gate of an orc fortress with a large trebuchet to get access to the castle.

If i'm right you're talking about fallout or Enclave or another post-3rd world war game and yes i guess the weapons in Gothic are realistic, but he has a point that if every boat had multiple magicians they wouldn't need any cannons since cannons would only make a hole whereas rain of fire would make holes and burn down the ship !!

Till you run out of cannon balls But then you could have a mage cast Summon Cannon Balls, and keep on shooting

Okey, I think i better answer the question. When gunpowder and bombards (primitive cannons) were first invented they were extreamly innacurate and dangerous things to use so knights still existed on the battlfield for about 100 years after gunpowder was invented (around 1250 to 1360) so, the fact that cannons are there sorta fits into the era (although i still find them a little strange). As for having them on a ship..im sure that it would be alot safer and quicker to smash the ship up with cannon AND flame it to hell as orc warships are supposed to be massive and we gotta remember they have shaman so it would essentially be about who could do the most damage quickest! Phew that was a long answer...MTW is a hive of historical information!

Well, cannons shoot at a longer distance than any fire spell in Gothic (as far as I know).I have little used rain of fire spell in my game but as far as I remember it has a very low range-->so if a mage wants to use it against the orc galleys he would probably burn down hhis own ship too.
BTW: I don't think there were enough fire mages in Myrthana to enlist them in the fleet on every ship at the begining of the war,so they had to rely on something else for long range combat at sea.

But fireball and large fireball have a very long range. Rain of fire is an area-spell and wouldn't be very effective. You can't really aim with the spell, it's all around you. So the magicians could better just burn a hole in the enemy ships.

It's a shame that no part of Gothic is played on the open sea, boarding orcish ships

That would be a nice feature. But you would have to stay in a third persion view, not something like in a RTS, that you sdee the ship from above.

I don't think that will be able in G3 but I'd like to see one of those Orcish Wargalleys they are using in the war against King Rhobar II. Something like the way you see the Paladin's ship in G2, just lying in the harbor. Of course in this case ths ship is probably destroyed, cause it would be really bad if you came in the capital and there was an Orc Ship lying in the harbor.

It probaly would be under attack..in chapter 5 if u talk to one of the dragon hunters (cant remember who) he will tell u that the orcs are laying seige to the capital and he heard that king Rhobar II was dead but he didn't belive it. Myrtana is finished from what I gathered but there could still be other kingdoms and/or armies like the one Sylvio came from fighting the orcs.

His name is Feros. He doesn't know it for sure and in G3 it will be exactly the same, as far as I know. The first people you'll meet don't know exactly what has happened and how the war is going. Whether or not the castle has fallen and so. I like that.

Yes, that's exactly why they weren't used for their original purpose for such a long time. Instead, they were used to frighten the opposing force (especially the commoners, which represented a huge part of any army) by making God-like noises; and that worked too, since we know that the technology didn't spread evenly to all of the kingdoms at the time.
