Quests in MMORPGs?
   

Can someone give me detail on how quests work in typical games like Everguest and World of Warcraft? I'm kinda confused. Can everyone complete every quest? Do quests regenerate? Do you have to compete with other players for quests? Any information would be appreciated.

BTW, nice job on the forums. This is the 2nd best forum I've seen, quick replies and everything.

Different games do it differently. Here is what i know:

Everquest: Each race/class has a few of their own quests. Only they can do them. Other quests can be done by anyone, or anyone of a certain class, etc. Often they require you to get an item off of something that spawns very rarely and there are lines of people trying to get it. Therefore the competition with others comes in trying to get a rare item when many people want it. Often the quest will take you hours or worse, days, and the reward will be junk to you. For the most part the quests are not worth doing. You cannot do all of the quests.

Earth and Beyond: Each profession has different quests to get your base skills. There is also a random quest generation machine that will give you a random quest to fulfill. For the most part you are not competing with others to do them, but you cannot do all of the quests.

As for quests regenerating, all of the games I play the characters that give them act as if there is nobody in the world other than you. They just ignore if someone else is doing the quest for them so it is available to you.

Other than that I am not really sure. Ultima Online did not really have a quest system.

In Dark Age of Camelot quest system is pretty much similar to what I read about EQ. However, in DAoC each class has their own Epic Quest (a continuing tale about the lore of the realm) that spawns all over the whole lifetime of a character and progresses further when the character gains power (each five levels or so). The Epic quest rewards can be quite useful sometimes and also fun to do.

Other types of quests are the normal quests received from NPCs which work quite similarly as in EQ I think. Certain quests can be received only by certain classes, some can be received by everyone but only certain classes can receive the reward and some quests can be completed by everyone.

Then there are tasks. There are tasks where you have to kill some monster (some guards give these), some tasks require you to act as a courier, and merchants can give tasks for crafters where you create a item they want for a small reward. If one wants to solo, the kill tasks are the best way to earn experience until level 20.

In Asheron's Call players find the quests by reading books and papers and by talking to NPC's. Some quests are really simple "Fetch a item" style having only one part to complete. Some quests require one to find a very rare item that is dropped by a certain rare monster, e.g. the Acid Vial that is dropped by some Grievvers, combined with another item it allows one to enter a place where War Magic specialists can quest for a decent armor. For example, when I started to look for this item it eventually took over a month of playing time until the monster dropped the item (at that time I was just hunting and had given up finding the item ). My brother got it when he killed his first Bane Grievver so it is purely affected by luck.

Some quests require huge parties (like the Olthoi Queen quest) and have many parts that must be finished in sequence. They can take hours and hours of work. And there are huge load of quests available. Everyone can complete every quest if they want, but the reward item can only be usable by a character with certain requirements (e.g. war magic skill of 300, Arcane Lore skill of 260 etc.). Also some rewards are only usable only by the person who finished the quest originally. Also, Unlike any other game, some AC quests can change the world and make things work quite different in certain areas.

AC2 quest system? Well, you will see

EQ also has an "Epic" quest for each class, however they started that after I quit, so I have no information for you on that one. All I know is that they are there.
