It seems like the Gothic setting is Australia, due to the orbits of the sun and moon.

So you are from Australia? And an astronomer?

Hell, I was so bad in geography at school, I wouldn't know where I live had I not been told repeatedly .

No, I'm from Minnesota. It seems by the inclination of the sun it is probably late autumn if the setting was the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere it would
be late spring.

Australia was originally a penal colony. The setting in Gothic is a penal colony. Australia has several large types of reptile... so does Gothic. The ocean was perceived as a 'barrier' against escape for penal Australia. There's a Barrier in Gothic.

Coincidences all? Perhaps...

Or perhaps not.

I was commenting on geographical and hostorical similarities. Obviously this is a fantasy game. There are orcs and sleepers and demons and magic and dinosaurs and stuff.

Content aside, the setting bears a lot of resemblence to penal Australia.

Australia is big, The area inside the barrier
is much smaller.... Maybe its more of a Alcatrez?

Alcatrez was a maximum security prison, nothing like the Gothic game world.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was somewhat based upon Australia.

Being an Australian myself, I can safely say that Gothic's setting barely resembles the environments found here in Australia. If it was based at all on Australia, it'd be the concept of it once being a penal colony. Again, that's unlikely. But hey, you never know. Maybe the orcs are there to represent the native Aborigonies we mercilessly slaughtered. Now that'd be ironic.

Environment wise, Gothic resembles Europe. Big surprise. I was talking conceptually.

Of course it's smaller. Code Australia? AUGH!

The orcs could be natives of some sort... problem with that theory being that the Orcs were depicted as the invaders.

Unless they were trying to take their land back.

Ah, this thread proves that you can indeed read too much into a game.

Orcs have built an ancient underground temple way before the barrier has been established. So they came to get their land back.
