I think not having the stats was the reason why. Give a digger a diggers discipline and attack him... he'll draw it, not his silly club.
As for armor... that's just weird. They eat food when injured, they equip weapons or retrieve them if they don't have one... why wouldn't they equip the best armor? Hmm...
