gothic 3: nvidia or ati?

i was curious as to what everyone is using here for gothic 2 and will be using for gothic 3. i'm in the process of getting a better graphics card and would like to know, which one gives better framerates for gothic 2? (and maybe 3 in the future).

looking at either: "radeon x800 pro" or "geforce 6800 gt".

thing is, i have an older system. p4/2.0ghz with 1gb ddr ram. is my system underpowered with any of these?

thought some of you would like to share your experiences with framerates with some of these cards, thanks.

Either of those cards should be fine for G3. The nVidia might be a better choice simply because you can buy a second one later and connect the two together, instead of throwing it away and buying a new card.

Comparing G3 to G2 is probably not wise. Gothic 2's engine was written by PB and it relies heavily on a good CPU. Even more so than a good Graphics card.

G3 is using a licensed engine, and will most likely be more optimized.

P.S. Yes your system is most likely underpowered for those. I have a P4 2.4Ghz with a Radeon 9700 Pro and my CPU holds the card back.

It´s hard to say if G2 is still compatible with both cards.
Your CPU is heavily underpowered. I would even call it a waste of money. You should either also update m/b + CPU or get a slower card. A Radeon 9800 or equivalent for 200$ will do fine.

thanks for the answers, i will check out that thread.

it's not a very big issue as far as getting the card for me so i don't mind going ahead with the slower card since it wouldn't make much difference.

the most important thing for me would be texture quality, at least, it brings the realism in more for me personally. does ati or nvidia have the edge with that?

and one more thing, is the 6800 (non ultra) still too powerful?

thanks for the help.

Yes it is.

Please explain to me how a CPU can reduce qualtiy of a graphics card???
As i thought those too were almost completely something else.

it can't reduce the quality (a monitor can) a CPU only can reduce the game speed due to RAM and/or the graphic card

A slow CPU can prevent the graphics card from reaching its maximum speed if the CPU cannot deliver enough data to the graphics card. Then the graphics cards spends its idle time with waiting for more data.

Exactly what Gorath said.

Its like trying to run a starship with a steam engine. You may have all the most fancy lazers and super fast drives, but if your engine cant provide enough power, then its a waste of time.

after thinking about it some more, i've decided to take gorath's advise.

i'm going to upgrade my processor to the highest processor i can for my motherboard model. unfortuately the fastest cpu i can get with my model is a 2.6Ghz but it's better than nothing. maybe i can even overclock it a little.

i have a new question, with a 2.6ghz, i know i'm still under the mark for the awesome graphic cards, but can i get a better one now?

Its up to you. But you are probably wasting money, because by the time you get around to upgrading your system to take full advantage of the new card, you could have just bought a more realistic one now, and got the uber one a lot cheaper later down the line.

I personaly would not put a nVidia 6800 or an ATI x800 in anything less than a 3Ghz machine with 1GB of Ram.
