What do you video card experts think of this... ?
I'm getting a new card, not spending too much - I'm currently looking at either an All-in-Wonder 9600 Pro, or an All-in-Wonder 9800 SE. They're about the same price. I know the 9600 Pro AIW's have some features the other AIW's don't, and that they are clocked slightly faster than the regular 9600 Pro. I don't know how much slower the "SE" variants are than the rest...
Does anyone have any idea how these two cars would compare, performance-wise? If they are close, I will probably go for the 9600, since it has slightly better features and is a little cheaper. |

I am not 100% sure but I dont think the 9600 implements DirectX9 effects. I have a 9700 Pro and I think that the 9700 was the first card released by ATI that implemented DirectX9 effects. _________________ IMHO my opinion is humble |

I don't like Radeon with "SE". Check review at Anandtech, Rage3D, Guru of 3D. _________________

I THINK (but I'm not certain) that all of the 9000 series Radeons support DX9, with the exception of the 9200. I think they were trying to stick with a standard naming system. I wouldn't be suprised if Chekote was right though.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I've changed my mind and gone for the 9800SE AIW
afaik, the 9600 does support dx9, and it has a really nifty feature that the higher models don't - it can do dual-monitor and tv-out/theatre mode, all at the same time, which would be great for me as I currently use both dual-monitor and tv-out, but alternately. The 9800 (and 9700) has no dual-monitor support, but I guess if I miss it that much I can just get a cheap PCI gfx card.
But on the other hand, the 9800SE looks a bit quicker, even if it is an SE. And there is a "tweak" out there that works on some of these cards that makes it function just like a 9800 Pro! I'll keep my fingers crossed for that, but even if it doesn't work it should still be pretty quick. |
