cant activate elevator at level 2

i have found two ropes, and try to put them at the cogs (wheels) that should activate the elevator to go to the goblin room and then next level. but the rope always falls on the ground.
how can i activate the mechanism?
the ropes were found at the area of the elevator, and should be useful.

It's been awhile, but I believe you need to "use" the rope in your inventory, not try to place it (drop it) on the cogs. If that's not it, try "using" the cogs while having the rope in your inventory.
