Archer/Mage viable?

Planning on playing through again as a mage. Went full melee last time and was interested in going ranged with my mage along with higher dex for thieving skills and quests. However, I'm concerned that ranged is not effective for mage or overly redundant with ranged magic. I was thinking I could use ranged as a way of conserving mana and to finish off enemies in close combat.

Does it only make sense to go partial melee with mage for close quarter fighting/out of mana? Is ranged effective in close quarters even?

First time I played Gothic 2 I played a mage with about 50-60% in one handed comabt. I don't realy see the point in having bow/crossbow skills as a mage since their attacks are ranged anyway.
