crashes

Recently i've been experiencing random crashes and i hope someone here might be able to help me solve the problem. As long as i use webbased applications things are fine, but as soon as i start another program (so far Gothic, Morrowind, Zeus and Windows Media Player (?!?)) the computer crashed in a few minutes
As far as i can tell nothing weird has happened that could have caused this.
Thanks for any tips you can give.

Oh and this is probably relevant : i have a dual boot (win98 and winxp) and the problems occur on both boots.

Do any errors appear after the prog crashes? and what kind of crash? (Get out instantly, or closing the windows or what?)

The entire pc crashes. I have to manually reset, nothing works anymore (screen stays the same, no mouse movemovent, keyboard commands dont function).

Maybe heat? The CPU gets more to do when you play games or media, and that makes it hotter. An easy thing to do is to download Motherboard Monitor 5, it will most likely be able to show how hot your CPU are. Anything above 65 degrees Celsius is very bad.

Thanks for thinking with me.
But alas, no it's not heat .
I've got that monitored.
The pc doesn't shut down, it just stops doing anything.

OK, although I think heat can lead to the compter freezing, without shutting itself down. But if you have it monitored, then I don't konw what it might be.

If the crashes happen in both operating systems, that rules out a software problem. The usual hardware problem is heat, but if that's okay I'll go with option two: faulty memory.

I would guess that you've got a bad chip, but you've got enough RAM that Windows on its own doesn't notice. Only when something big starts up and all your RAM is being used does the problem occur.

If you only have one DIMM installed, see if you can borrow some memory off a friend for a few days. If you have two DIMMs installed, try removing one and see how things go. If it crashes, swap the chips over. Then if it still crashes, your memory is likely fine, but something else is broken!

Are you monitoring heat on all your components?

Your problem can be caused by overheating of the CPU or the GPU or other components...

The only two reasons I know that causes the problems you describe are overheating, and insufficient power.

Agreed, this can be the second most serious problem other than CPU overheating. Did you check your power supply unit?

Patience. Some hard discs require a certain amount of cooling, so it´s not necessarily a defect. In a cramped system the normal air flow might not be enough. Maybe an additional fan pointed at the drive electronics will do the job.
