(1) Why when I face a ladder and press ctrl up do I begin to go down only to return to my starting position?

(2) I have a key and face a chest - I go to inventory but cannot use the key - what am I doing wrong?

1. I�m not sure I do really understand the question. Lets just say you focus the ladder, press (ctrl or LMB) + up and keep it pressed. Your char climbs to the other end of the ladder.
2. If you have the necessary key you don�t need to equip it. Just use the chest, the char should use the key automatically. Don�t blame me if this info is wrong, I played Gothic months ago.

2. If you have "a" key and you stand in front of a chest and the chest won't open; then probably the key you have isn't for that particular chest. Try the right or left arrow keys. You might have to "lockpick" the chest
