To see the coolest effects you will need a card that supports advanced pixel shading. The GeForce 4 Titaniums do this (not the GF4 MX) and maybe the ATI 8500.
The cheapest GF4 I've seen was $151 at newegg.com. It was a GF4 ti 4200 with 64mb DDR. |

the geforce3 supports it too, so the cheapest you'll get away with is probably a gf3 ti200, the gf4 ti cards have dual pixel shaders, but the engine isn't really optimized for it so it won't matter much, you might be bale to run higher levels of antialisaing with a gf4 ti card thugh at the same framerate
you can generally get geforce3 ti200 cards in the $150 price range and geforce4 ti card from $250 as far as I've seen, but shopping around you will probably catch one cheaper
if you don't care for the oh so nice and realistic pixelshaded water but just want something that works ok a geforce2 mx or geforce4 mx will also work just fine and those are in the $80-130 pricerange.
I have no experience with ATI card since I haven't used one since the mach64 so I can't give any opinions or advice on that. |

The cards available now in that price range that have Advanced Pixel Shading:
GF3 Ti200 $92
Radeon 8500 $104
Both are excellent cards and worth every penny

That's actually Dual Vertex shaders |

aha! ok, I'm a bit rusty on gfx cards nowadays, reading too much about them only makes me wanna buy new ones all the time!
I would also wanna see if they patched the engine at some point to take advantage of more stuff before I upgraded my gfx card, but you really can't go wrong with one of those Uruz mentioned at those prices , guess there's really no point in going for any of the mx cards if the price difference is that negligable |

I have owned both.
I still have my 8500... sold the Ti200
i love the 8500 much more than the Ti200. and now with the latest drivers the 8500 is out performing the Ti500. |

Don't say that!!! now I have to switch gfx card after reading this
Is there a noticable difference between the 8500 and the Ti500 or is it mostly in benchmarks, and 10 page reviews on hardware sites, those that make you wanna buy every new gfx card on the market cause it will make your q3a run 5 frames faster hehe
I have been thinking about trying out one of the ATI cards the last years, but never gotten around to it, the geforce chips just seem to have sported more hyped features I really feel I needed
Btw is the savage 2000 chipset a totally loss now? it was supposed to be great, well back in the days before they made cards with it that is. |

My beef with ATI is that they only release drivers once a decade .
So by this time next year all the geforce users will be about 4-5 drivers ahead of the games.
Then with an ATI card you'll be stuck with no options if a game doesn't work with a particular driver. |

They are out
But they're still $153 at the cheapest, so out of the price range specified
If youo can afford the extra $25, that is the way to go |

Don't buy the Prophet. It's crap. Well, it isn't crap really, but it is extremely dated. _________________ Rendelius
