I just noticed in this other thread that Morrowind seems to be the RPG that almost everyone is looking forward to the most. Are you people really sure about your expectations ?
I think Morrowind could have been one of the best CRPGs ever if it had a good combat system. AFAIK, Bethesda is planning on making the same mistake for a second time. They want us to simulate sword combat by moving our mice all over the place just like in Daggerfall.
I'm really having a hard time to stay calm when I just think about it. There is this great RPG with beautiful gfx, an intriguing plot and all the ingredients needed for a rich CRPG experience and then they put a sword fight sim in there ? No, thank you, Bethesda.
So, what's your opinion on the combat system ? Is Morrowind still your No. 1 even if fighting works like in Daggerfall ?

Oh yes - actually I liked the swordfighting style in Daggerfall. Mouse was a little bit slow, but over all it made sense for me

i like the daggerfall/battlespire sword combat system -
in other games you just click on any opponent - that's boring.

I didn't have that much trouble with the sword/mouse swings in Daggerfall I think.
The things I remember most from that game are 1. the IMMENSE size of the country
2. the wonderfull freedom I felt playing it and 3. the bugs that made me quit...sadly.
But not the combat system. It didn't impress or annoy me that much I think
But I'm sure Bethesda will make *some* changes from Daggerfall. After all, it's been a while.

I really enjoyed the combat system in Daggerfall. It could use some refinement, but it made the game more immersive for me. I like the way that the more you used a skill, the better you became at that skill ( with the exception of jumping). I always found the warrior combat system in the likes of Might and Magic to be fairly boring, and not much better then Diablo.
I just hope that my PC is good enough to run it. |

Right, Rend. As long as I get to be Hardy .
Hmm... not exactly what I expected. I was really hoping to see some outraged anti-Daggerfall-combat-system people here .
Well, on the other hand one might as well wait and see if and how the system is changed in Morrowind. First thing they'll have to do is crank the mouse sensitivity all the way up so you just have to move your mouse a tiny little bit to the left or right instead of cleaning your mouse pad with it.
A mouse just isn't designed for simulating sword combat.

Looks like you have been out voted Hardy. We have a bunch of Daggerfall fans here. No if ands or buts about it! Just think if we could mix Morrowind with Arx Fatalis, our mouses would have a heart attack!

I also enjoyed the combat in Daggerfall which was a surprise to me. I've always prefered turnbased combat. Somehow they made it feel right to me.
It was the same in Arena also wasen't it? I can't recall. Its been too long.
Now what turned me off Daggerfall were those horribly convuluted random dungeons and maps. In the simple ones it was ok but in the many times I restarted that game eventually I would end up in some dungeon all twisted around and just get pissed and say enough and go on to another game.
That said I eagerly await Morrowind. I really dig the world the've created. |

I would think with the right rules, you could make a random dungeon generator that would rock. I wonder if there is a market for a random dungeon generator out there... Hrm... Can you code ren? Might be the solution to your money worries!

I was thinking of a RPG like elite was for the space sim ( maybe elite could be considered a RPG ???)
I think about Elite - first encounters.
I mean : a generated planet; with generated NPC, monsters, terrain, and speech !!
(maybe the vocal synthesis isn't ready for that )
Do you get the idea ? |
