I think if pc game developers really want to make the money... they probably would be better off with a family strategy game akin to Rollercoaster Tycoon, The Sims and Age of Empires. These 3 games alone have pretty much crushed the fps competition. Personally, I wish every top 10 game was an rpg... but thats highly unlikely... unless they are all made by Blizzard that is.

etc

The problem with RPG's is that they cost a lot to develop - and they don't have this large audience. If you do a shooter, you license a nice engine and tweak it a littel, but actually there is no engine that has the needed flexibility to produce appealing RPG's.

Well I don't think the RPG market is as bad as all this... I mean there are a lot of really good RPGs just around the corner. Wizardy 8 is just having a hard time, and I think it is because they are asking for too much. It seems like they are in dire straights as a company right now. They are probably trying to get a deal to save the company for a few years, and not just publish Wizardy 8.

These people need to cut their losses and sell immediately! This is ridiculous! It's like a man dying of thirst in the desert refusing a drink of water because it isn't Perrier. It seems to me that after 9 months of having a finished product, at this point it's a question of getting the game out for less money than you expected, or not getting it out AT ALL!

What we need to do here is to give Sir-Tech a little motivation...Someone from RPGdot or another site with the press demo needs to release the darn thing into the Warez community and let it get around like Syphilus for a few weeks. Hopefully this will make them wake up and make a damn deal. Better yet, someone needs to obtain an actual copy of the whole game and distribute THAT on the internet. I'll bet they'd sell pretty quickly then, to try and prevent everyone from downloading it.

Just my 2 cents.

I personally have lost interest in Wizardry.
It has taken TOO long and there are TOO many unclarities about it.
They say it's finished, runs great, almost no bugs left so WHY no publisher and WHY no news?

I think a) it could be that it's not all that Sir-tech claims it to be or
b) it's just too freakin' dated or
c) Sir-tech is in trouble and are asking for more then just a publishing deal on Wizardry 8 (perhaps 9 and 10 as well?)
d) a combination of all the above

With all the new Geforce accelerated rpg games that are comming, Wizardy just ain't up to par anymore I'm affraid.
There will be better and fresher ones to take its place.
Games that will offer the same good gameplay, or perhaps even better, with superior graphics.

Let's face it, wizardry has become a bargain bin product at best. A sad conclusion but I can come to no other one.

To add my 5 cents I can say that 1 million dollars is not an unheard number actually for making an RPG. It's a lot of money and for a good RPG it's paid. Just make the math: 400.000 copies sold of an RPG makes it a good selling game. 400.000 * $30 = 12 million dollars. So 1 million dollars is not a lot of money with these numbers. Unfortunately not all RPGs sell like Diablo (which does a lot more than 400.000 copies) or Baldur's Gate.

There are however only a few publishers willing to put down this kind of money and not a lot of them are doing very well at the moment. There are a lot of publishers that will not pay these amounts as they are to much and to risky.
And lets face it 400.000 copies sold for a console game makes that game a loser. So with the same investment you can earn a lot more money with a console game.

I doubt the console idea is going to hold. With all the new consoles coming out. Everyone and their brother is coming out with the latest and greatest ohmigosh console technology. Who are the game developers going to code for? Its not like you can write the game once and use it on all consoles. I think consoles will become more computer like, and before you know it the same game will run on consoles and computers.

First post on this topic for several weeks, but today's news are too important:
SirTech shut down and what is happening to Wizardry 8?
3 days ago, both Ian & Linda Currie semi-officially announced that Wiz8 will be released in about 2 months.
I doubt they were so narrow-minded not to be able to foresee the developments at Sir Tech, so I believe that there really must be a publisher which will release Wizardry 8 posthumous.

In fact turning over control to someone else(maybe with more--shall we say--modest expectations) may make it easier to get wiz8 on the market.

Have a look at our frontpage. We were able to confirm both newsbits we had over the last two days. Yes, SirTech will shut down, and yes, we will see Wizardry 8 this year.

The PC market seems to be dying. Origin, GOD, Ion Storm and Dynamix all produced pretty decent games ( Anachronix in the case of Ion Storm, which was quite enjoyable ), yet have passed into a new plane of existance. Interplay will concentrate on consoles, if by some miracle they manage to survive. 3DO could be the next causualty. Blizzard, Westwood and Id, all seem to be living in the past.

It seems that in order to have a hit, a game has to be hyped to high heaven. Black and White and Max Payne are both enjoyable games, but the reviews were laughable.

The only thing that is keeping me interested in the PC scene is the likes of Divine Divinity and Arx Fatalis, both by new groups, and Morrowind.

Still, if the PC dies, it might give me a chance to complete Balders Gate 2 and Arcanum.

Don't forget Dungeon Siege. It looks too good to be true, actually.

Yes, DS and NWN - they could do a lot for the genre. It all depends on how easy the editors are to use. I am really tempted to build modules - I don't lack ideas, mainly time.

Dungeon Siege looks very interesting. But what will happen to NWN if Interplay go bankrupt? Does Interplay or Bioware have the rights to the D+D license? Will it be published by Hasbro?

Will there never be a Fallout 3?

I'm guessing that Dungeon Siege will have the easiest editor to use. Just based on using the tools for Total Annihilation, Chris Taylor knows that modding is important.

Early reports on DS, MW and NWN seem to indicate you do need to know some scripting elements (whcih shouldnt be too tough for most people who mod games..), though DS seems to have the best scripting language for its game supposedly.

Hopefully MW isn't too tough, thats the game I want to make stuff (if i have time as well) for.
