Help with Picking locks

I am interested in gaining the lockpicking skill just in case I need it...

My problem is I am not given the opportunity to gain Thorben's trust to get the lock pick skill. I cannot get the quest with Matteo and Gritta to work. I have already gained 4 of 5 approvals and became an apprentice to the Hunter.

I could easily solve this by joining the Thieves Guild but I was hoping to join the Mercs Guild and become a Dragon Hunter.

Any suggestions?

Also, has anyone played the game through as a Thief? How was it?

Joining the thieves won't ruin your chance of joining a guild. You can still join the mercs after joining the thieves.
