I found Some kind of wisp in the forest and when it went to attack me it did no damage and I couldn't do any damage to it. Is this some kind of quest later on?

No they aren't quest related(at least I think  ) but when you kill them, after a while the will return.
It's not impossible to hit them(even with meele weapon) but it's not easy.
Anyway they give you 60xp |

meelee weapons do damage to them ..you don't have to have even a big sword, bows/xbows don't hit ..wisp flies up and up..

OK so I plan on spending some time looking for the thing again and then commence attacking it. It's never hurt me before, can it injure me when it attacks or does it just try to run?

Yes it can hurt you, but not much, and it doesn't hit you often(I think it has low accuracy and a lot of evade chance, a very long but simple fight) |
