Starting a mage from scratch...need tips

I'm starting a new mage character and I was wondering if it is worth while for me to invest in any of the other fighting skills besides magic? Am I pretty safe just using magic alone?

As magic uses ranged attacks (most of the time), you might be well off if you pick one-handed weapons in addition to it, just in case an enemy manages to get close.

Build up 1H and STR before you become a novice. You'll need it. 30 & 65 are good numbers!!

If you get 30%(expert) at 1H fighting, you'll be able to use a very good combo. Gaining 65 in strength is also an advantage, but do not do this at the very beginning. You'll get several potions of permanent strength later on(at least if you learn alchemy, and I advice you to do so as a magician), so 35 in strength(able to wield a Fine Longsword) should be enough.

best thing to do is train up all your combat related stats before becoming a novice.

Why? Because after becoming a novice all str (maybe dex) and combat skills double in cost.

So do as much of the combat training before joining so as to save learning points.

Starting Mage

It seems logical to post my question to this thread as it almost identical to the original question. If I should have started a new one I appologize before hand.

I want to play the mage character. Currently, Chapter 1, Lvl 14, Str 20, (40 w/amulet&ring),1h=10%, and Mana=20, with only 50 LP's left. I want to take the advice on boosting 1H to 30%, and STR to 65. However, I am concerned that I won't have enought LP's for creating Runes, advancing in circles, and boosting Mana later in the game to become a powerful mage.

So given my situation, if I boost my 1H to 30% and my STR to 65, will I still be able to garner enough LPs later to become a powerful mage. Also I tested boostin my 1H to 30% but my stats indicated only "fighter" not "expert" as indicted in a previous message.

Finally, as to STR I know that when I join the mage guild costs for double. Should I boost STR now with LP's and save the potions for when I become a mage?

Thanks in advance.
